William Harold Woods, 18, was killed instantly when struck by an east bound Santa Fe train near Thoreau New Mexico last Tuesday after midnight. Born June 12 1896 in Revere Missouri he was the son of G S Woods of Chambers. He recently worked for the Santa Fe at Manuelito and was training as an agent and operator. Funeral services were held at Chambers with many relatives present.
Holbrook and vicinity report a steady stream of visitors from Winslow St Joseph Pinto Lakeside and Springerville. Local business activity includes drug firm drilling a well and a boarding house rental while new telephones are installed at several shops. A for sale Oliver Typewriter is offered and visitors plan follow ups to San Diego Oakland and other coast points.
Mrs C C Manning hosted a Valentine whist party for six tables at Mrs Clarence Hunt Jordan’s home on Saturday afternoon. Red and white carnations decorated rooms. prizes included a red satin head filled with candy for the winner and a small red heart for the booby. A two course lunch followed with red chrysanthemum favors concealing salted nut cases.
A bridge party Tuesday afternoon featured an auction style game with prizes. Mrs. Clarence Jordan won first prize, a dainty silver almond dish, while Mrs. C. C. Manning of Gallup received the guest prize, a drawn work daily. A two course lunch followed, with attendees including Mesdames W. B. Woods C. H. Jordan J. W. Bazell W. H. Clark Sidney Sapp D. J. Thomas and Miss Jo McClanahan.
A surprise party on Sunday the 15th featured about a dozen boys invited by Miss Rachel Thomas and Miss Ina Peterson to honor Royal Thomas. A two course luncheon with fruit punch followed, and the birthday cake hid a dime and a button. Royal blew out 14 candles in one breath. Guests included Claud Flanigan Willie Eddie Roy Woods Ray Despain Guy Despain Louie Diyelbess Herold Diyelbess Wesley Newman James DeWitt Jack Sebring and Royal Thomas.
A special Washington-Lincoln program will be given by Intermediate grades next Monday February 22. A debate between representatives of the two rooms will be a main feature. Marlory Henning visited Pinto with her parents. The eighth grade completed U S History and now reviews the book for spring exams. George Hasting joined the fourth grade. Esther and Sylvia Dunning returned to Holbrook and resumed sixth grade. Jack and Warren Smith left for their ranch near Pinedale. Sixth graders study Advanced History while Primary Histories move to the fifth grade, both feeling grown up.
Mr and Mrs C H Jordan entertained Sunday evening for their house guest Mrs C H Manning. A six course dinner was served with a pink and white color scheme. The centerpiece featured carnations and golden roses with pink and white sweet pea boutonniere for each guest. Favors included tiny heart shaped boxes and pink and white candy baskets. Covers were laid for eight.
At the Arizona Cattle Growers Association annual convention in Douglas on January 4 5 6 a resolution was adopted to list stock for sale with the Secretary. Small cattlemen can connect with buyers via the Secretary in Phoenix. listing is nonbinding and allows direct sales while keeping options open.
Mrs. E. H. Thomas of Logansport Indiana commends Chamberlains Cough Remedy as the best medicine for colds and croup and notes it constantly provides prompt relief for her children. Sold by all dealers.
A call is issued for the eighteenth annual convention of the American National Live Stock Association to be held in San Francisco starting March 24. The gathering will address foot and mouth disease, rail rate changes, land and forest policy, meat inspection, and livestock financing with Hon. Woodrow Wilson likely to speak. Very low exposition rail rates are noted and the California Cattlemen's Protective Association will meet at the Exposition Memorial.
The Holbrook Ward of the Snowflake Stake held a February 15 meeting in the Court Room to reorganize and promote building a new church. Apostle F. Richards and Elder Hy rum Smith from Salt Lake City ordained officers including Ward Bishop John H. Miller and First Counselor David Brinkerhoff. President Samuel F. Smith and counselors James M. Flake and Alaf Larson presided. The stake leaders announced a modern design for the church, to be built soon. Mrs. Jesse Hulet hosted the Friday Club last week.
