Arizona joined the union as the 48th state with Governor William Paul Hunt sworn in by Chief Justice Alfred Franklin. The day featured simple ceremonies at the capitol, a Bryan reception, and crowds of residents celebrating. A foot race dispute between Ollie Glaze and Perfecto Silva fizzled, but a 300 yard horse race between Dick Greer and Henry Glaze drew cheers, with bettors hoping for a rematch.
Soldiers from Fort Apache departed Sunday for homes schools and other posts while new recruits arrived from Columbus Ohio the next day to fill relieved positions. A grand canyon lion skin measuring nine feet sparked interest at Holbrook. Community notes cover local officials, visits, religious services, fires, births, marriages, and stock conditions.

Washington reports Ralph Cameron rejects a Phoenix rumor that Fort Whipple is to be abandoned. He states clearly the post will not be left. Cameron consulted with the departments before any Arizona publicity appeared on the alleged closure.
