Big capitalists from Tucson and El Paso toured Holbrook asserting the field’s potential as an oil district. They predicted rapid activity with a fourth rig unloading and plans for five wells in April. Multiple drilling outfits, including a world scale company, are expected to join early exploration.
Bob Adams and Denver geologist Mr. Beeler met Judge D J Thomas in Holbrook to finalize leases on the Flanigan ranch and other Holbrook lands. Adams plans a drilling rig on Flanigan by March 15 and a second rig on Henry Scorse land by early May. A Star rig will drill to 1500 feet on Flanigan, with a Standard rig on Scorse.
The oil situation remains a national concern as investors favor oil stock in times of peace and war. Ranger Field in Texas shows strong production and signals more large fields will be needed to meet rising demand. Miss Durant won high score and Mrs Kelly had the low. guests included Mesdames Thomas Coleman Raynolds Jordan Brugh Scorse Kelly Patterson Woods Ayres Turbeville Flanigan Newman Close Chamberlin Hall Braxton McClanahan and Durant. A two course luncheon followed the games with red and white carnations and frosted cakes decor.
Fritz Luerson owner of Holbrook Bakery arranges distribution through the Navajo Cafe. Most stores close at night and Sundays, but the cafe stays open day and night including Sundays, giving customers access to bakery goods anytime. Luerson has built a prosperous business by personal attention and quality goods, reducing reliance on outside Los Angeles bread suppliers.
During the regular meeting Mayor Hennessy and Councilmen Chamberlin Flanigan with Clerk Neel presided. Chamber of Commerce head L E Carron urged a 200 dollar appropriation for preparing a landing place for U S aviators expected to stop in Holbrook. The council approved a 100 dollar allotment.
Mrs. W. R. Scorse enjoyed a Tuesday night gathering with about twenty friends. The party featured games dancing and late evening refreshments with attendees including Mesdames Stiles Dowell Osborne Robert Smith Clauson E W Hennessey Cross King Taylor Neel Saxton Chas Thomas Misses Rose Scorse Effie Smith Allie Lou Cross Lola Rencher Mary Nellie Lopez Leola Hennessey.
The Thursday Club, an eighteen member Holbrook ladies group formed two weeks ago, met at Mrs John Flanigan's residence. Card games were played and light refreshments served, with members including Mesdames Coleman Cadwell Crosby Flanigan Hennessey Jordan Moritz Newman Patterson Raynolds Richards Scorse Scorse Sapp Teeple Thomas Woods and Miss May McClanahan.
Geologist A B Baird returned from a month long business visit in Los Angeles and other California cities. He met capitalists and sparked interest in investments for the Holbrook oil field. It is likely he will organize a company to drill for oil in the spring.
Sheriff C. W. Harp and Deputy De Witt arrested Juan Cortes a Mexican resident south of the river for beating his wife. Officers forced entry after he refused to admit them, and a complaint of aggravated assault is filed, deeming the crime a felony.
D V Snowgoose vice president and general manager of the Arizona-Okla Gas & Oil Co leaves after a brief visit with his wife. They travel to Osawatomie Kansas where the firm owns a large acreage with three producing wells. Wells are being pumped and will be drilled deeper to seek flowing wells. Mrs Snowgoose accompanies him.
New management opened Pas Time Theatre with a strong program led by Goldwin Picture The Heart of the Sunset as the main feature and a one reel comedy. The house was packed with standing room at a premium as Cadwell Company shows promise of value for patrons this week.
Vicente de Baca pleaded guilty Tuesday in Justice D. W. Easley's court to selling two pints of whiskey to a Holbrook resident. Easley bound him over to the Superior court with a $500 bond. failure to post bond sent him to jail.
D Vigil of Winslow was arrested by Sheriff Harp and Deputy DeWitt Monday night after selling a pint of whisky to a Mexican resident south of the river. Vigil is jailed and will answer to bootlegging charges in Superior Court.
Notice to all automobile owners who have not secured their 1919 license numbers to pay licenses and obtain numbers at once or face penalties. The Secretary of State reports all numbers on hand and ready for immediate forwarding once applications are received. C. W. Harp, Sheriff.
