New Hobbs votes on sewer bonds and election of recorder and treasurer. Voters approved a $40,000 sewer bond. In treasurer race Ashley defeated incumbent Wire 103 to 50. Final tallies show ballots cast 44, with 35 for bonds and 9 against.
William H. Carter, 74, died at General Hospital Tuesday night from heart failure and double pneumonia. He was the father of Park Carter and was a longtime resident connected to the ee 3 de Contes home.
The Hobride Oilems defeated visiting Lamesa 11 to 8 on Sunday afternoon at the diamond. Burieson and Stordevant led the offense with key plays while Smith piled up hits. John King of Hercules Powder Co. and Grady Thompson visited Lea to brief the Geophysical crew.
Eastern New Mexico Junior College Portales has applied to the National Youth Administration for 400 students. If funded, two building projects for 100 students each are planned. A survey of Clovis Portales and Elida business professional and agricultural interests backs the apprenticeship program for enrolled students.
A fire from a leaking pipe near a battery of tanks on the Gyp sy lease caused much excitement Thursday noon but did little damage. The fire department extinguished the blaze quickly.
In the last issue the ad listed roast at 2 pounds for 15¢ and 88 pounds of flour for $1.69. The correct prices are roast 15¢ per pound and flour 48 pounds for $1.69.
Miss Jo Jean Ramey died Wednesday morning in a Lubbock hospital after living in Hobbs for a year and having previously resided in Lubbock.
Recwell reports the Hobbs beauty winner traveled Friday to Roswell for the semifinals and will perform in the final contest at the Yucca Theater with events at Carlsbad Caverns noted.
Miss Marguerite Williams returned Sunday from California where she attended summer school at the University of Southern California.
C. C. Goodwin traveled to Dallas this week for sinus treatment under Dr. Herrington, a specialist. The latest reports indicate he is much improved.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Gamel of Lubbock visit Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Neal, guests and relatives as Mrs. Neal’s parents.
The state appeals a contempt ruling in the case State of New Mexico v W H Patten mayor L W Gay and John L Emerson. The Lovington court discharged the defendants and the state seeks Supreme Court review amid alleged election irregularities at Hobbs. The docket also notes motorist certificate enforcement after 7 00 p m by patrolmen and pending transcripts involving Oklahoma ties.
Attorneys for Shirley Elder seek to move the damage suit against Jim Walker and others to federal court. The case arises from a car wreck weeks ago injuring Miss Elder. Plaintiff attorney Melvin Neal of Hobbs and defense lawyers John R. Brand of Hobbs and L. Ward Bannister of Denver are named.
Mrs. Dal Woods of near Lovington was bitten by a large rattlesnake Saturday morning as she stepped from her yard. She received serum and is reported to be doing nicely. Warnings are issued to watch for rattlesnakes in August when they are blind and commonly seek warm spots.
Louise Oliver five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs D A Oliver of West Taylor street was struck by a car Thursday sustaining a broken collar bone with injuries to shoulder and head. She was treated at General Hospital.
Tidewater to Sink Test Mile North of Hobbs Production launches five new locations in Lea county Monument region. Amerada Petroleum stakes No F-2 and No C-1 while Shell Gypsy and Phillips also open sites. A sulphur encounter near Henderson Langley No.1 yields 27 barrels oil in 10 hours and 47 barrels in 24 hours at 3 455 feet.
At a meeting of the Independent Progress party in Hobbs Pecwten Jd. D. Jones was elected Chairman of Lea County Central Committee and Ben H. Cook was chosen secretary. The organizers report 329 members in Hobbs and note no affiliation with other state groups.
The News announces a planned city directory for Hobbs and New Hobbs to map residents and business firms. Census workers will record head of household names occupation and family details, leaving a numbered slip at each visited residence to aid listing and future advertising.
The Federal Trade Commission reports wide price variation up to 20 percent among chain stores and a use of loss leaders to draw traffic then raise prices on other merchandise. Charles J. Canada died at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque on a Saturday from asthma and lung complications. He moved to Hobbs in 1930 with his wife and children and used the Se Goodwin Funeral Home for services. Interment followed at North Cemetery.
John Austin pleaded guilty to narcotic addiction charges and received 90 days in county jail. The sentence was suspended on conditions that he remain in a program or under supervision and that similar behavior not occur.
Following sheriff and motor patrol raids at Eunice, complaints filed accuse individuals including John Montgomery Homer Smith Holt Pete Vaughn Bob King Gilbert and Earl Fletcher of operating or being interested in gambling devices. King remains in custody while others were released from the county jail.
