Within two months Gary will be connected with Miller Chesterton and other territory east of the city. The gravel road extending Fifth avenue east is being pushed through rapidly and Miller trustees expect the final link to join Gary to the Hobart township system with work far advanced and likely complete before November first.
An 88 year old Hobart resident, Augustus Wood, was badly hurt when an auto driven by his son in law Dr. J A Ryan collided with a lumber wagon near Valparaiso. Wood suffered a broken right leg above the knee and a broken shoulder. Dr Ryan had minor injuries. Wood is resting with physicians and hope for recovery strong.
In a response to a letter from the Williamsport Review E D Crumpacker defends his stance on dollar a day pensions. He notes no such bill has reached the House and blasts Democratic opposition while praising Republican support and past reforms for veterans. He recalls urging a $24 a month pension for Civil War veterans and affirms continued backing for liberalizing pensions.
The Logansport convention passed a resolution supporting continuing outsourcing of road taxes and a law to pay the tax to the trustee for use under the county engineer. It also endorsed convict labor for road material. In Liverpool, Mrs Gust Escherich fell on steps and dislocated her shoulder.
Hobart Town voters will cast ballots at Odd Fellows building Main and Fourth streets from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. September 21 1910 to fill a vacancy as Clerk. R R Peddicord pro tem, polling officers named, candidate filings due September 6. County Council allocates twelve hundred fifty dollars to Lake County Agricultural Society funding the fair.
Clarence Carpenter youngest son of Mr and Mrs James H Carpenter of Gary and formerly Hobart died at Mercy hospital Gary Sunday evening after an operation aged 18 He worked as an electrician in Gary steel mills and was a popular Hobart youth Interment was held Wednesday at 2 30 from the train with no local service The family has the community's sympathy in their loss.
Terre Haute Ind September 14 A total loss of about $40,000 resulted from a fire in Jasonville. The blaze began in Green Valley company store in the business district and raged for hours before local firemen and volunteers stopped it. The store was destroyed and the tele phone exchange partly destroyed while several small business houses and dwellings were damaged. The fire department prevented a wider disaster.
Bernard Hoke in Terre Haute assaulted his wife after his daughter was killed by a live wire in his telephone office work room. He blamed himself for the accident and nearly strangled her before help arrived as his mind gave way from remorse.
Peter F. Jacobson announces his candidacy for the office of Clerk of the town of Hobart. He asks the electorate to support him at the special election scheduled for Wednesday September 21.
Col Isaac Leonard Ellwood founder of the barbed wire industry and key figure in De Kalb Illinois died Sunday night at his home. He was 77 and widowed after 51 years of marriage to Mrs Ellwood who died August 15 at 74. Also noted were L B Barnes Dr Kenward August Roos and E J Looker visiting Chicago for the big ball game.
Construction has begun on a $3 million car and locomotive shop complex for the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railroad in Elkhart Indiana. It will be the largest shop plant on the New York Central system except Beech Grove and is expected to employ about 3,000 men. Elkhart activity rises with the project.

Joseph Suzer, 29, was shot by Emery Hyjer after a quarrel in which Hyjer was defending Suzer's wife. Suzer lies in Epworth hospital. Hyjer has vanished.
