U S Steel seeks congressional permission to build half mile long lake slips at Gary into a vast inland harbor. The plan includes dredging hundreds of acres, steel and concrete docks, electric cranes, and a twenty five foot depth to handle larger lake freighters. The project aims to create the finest fresh water harbor, with railroad tracks along the slips for efficient transfer of steel, ore and cargo.
