Carter H. Harrison secures the Democratic nomination for mayor of Chicago. He leads a field of contenders with strong party backing and broad voter support in the decisive primary.
Monday evening Hobart town board held a special session to discuss John C. Cavender's street car franchise application. The ordinance advanced to second reading as Col. Hord spoke on franchise provisions and electric line construction, with final action deferred to next meeting likely granting the franchise. Residents favor the line to Gary and Valpo, pledging support.
Jacob Walter proprietor of the Hunters' home in Keuts faced a murder charge for the Dec 16 killing of Alvin Johnson of Wren Ohio. The jury acquitted him after he testified Johnson was too friendly with his wife. The trial in Valpo lasted about a week.
Miller citizens reject renewed annexation plans by Gary. They insist a majority petition is impossible and warn that joining Gary would raise taxes at least 25 percent without clear benefits to Miller eight square miles.
Mrs. E. P. Fisher died of typhoid fever at the county poor farm after being found ill near Miller and brought there Wednesday evening. Her husband is in Panama and unaware of the death and the fate of their two small children left to friends.
Timothy McAuliff Sr aged 79 died suddenly Thursday morning. A lifelong resident of the Hobart area since 1871 he was born in Ireland and left a widow with two sons and a daughter. Funeral services were held at the family home Saturday at 10 with interment at Turkey Creek Cemetery.
Attorney R R Peddicord will begin at an early date the erection of an office building on the vacant lot between the Gazette office and Scheddell's store. Jacob Kramer Jr owns the lot. The modern structure will be arranged for office work to accommodate his growing legal practice.
A series of marriages takes place in Indiana with couples from Hobart Valparaiso and Cambria. John F Griffin and Julia Fleck wed at 8 30 am at a Catholic church in Hobart with George Griffin and Anne Fleck as attendants. Jesse M Frame and Olive Qualls wed at the bride's home in Hobart. Frank Schumacher and Elisa Foreman marry at the German Evangelical Lutheran church with a large crowd. Albert Witt and Frieda Kegebein marry at the Lutheran Parsonage with Rev E R Schaalke presiding.
The Tribune reports a 19 to 18 Gary girls win over Hobart in Emerson gym in a thrilling late surge led by Blanche Jillson. Hobart led 9 to 5 at halftime as MacNeill scored twice and a free throw while Hobart’s forwards hit four field goals and one free throw. In the second half Gary’s guards clamped down, Jillson added a late free throw to seal the victory. lineups listed for both teams. A Saturday game saw Gary Night School defeat Hobart 19 to 15 with coach Nethe rt on the visit to Hobart.
Dr. Gordon has employed Omer Theaker for three years and will send him to the American Automobile College in Chicago. He plans to study auto mechanics, commuting daily from Battle Creek and back, after bringing Theaker home and promising to educate him in his chosen path.
The Indiana House debated whether marriage should rely on romance or science. Rep Redgood's bill required male marriage license applicants to present a health certificate from a physician. It passed 51 to 33 with 16 absent or dodging. Governor Marshall opposed, saying it would rob marriage of romance. ministers of Richmond and Dr J N Hurty supported it.
Attorney Chase of the Chicago New York Airline asks the Gary board of public works for permission to bring cars from the northern Indiana interurban lines onto Gary tracks. The final missing link will be finished by August 1, completing a large system linking Goshen Elkhart South Bend LaPorte Chesterton Gary and Hammond.
The Crown Point Star notes early buzz about a forthcoming Republican county slate with new candidates. Names mentioned include Geo W Lewis Indiana Harbor and Harry Johnson now at German National Hammond, with East Chicago and Recorder roles also discussed. Sheriff candidates surface and incumbents loom as the ticket forms.
Democrats backslide as Indiana’s lower house rejects Governor Marshall’s high license plan. House committee favors 500 dollar license with one salon per 500 inhabitants, not the Proctor senate bill’s 700 and one per 1000. An odd 100 dollar beer license is proposed, risking more saloons and evading regulation. Gary Tribune notes New York City parks valued at 1.2 billion.
Gary capitalist Englehart stopped in Laporte on Saturday to meet Col. U. P. Hord, Air Line promoter, at the Teegarden hotel. Hord said Hobart interurban line may join Air Line system, with bond funding and local support pledged.
An order issued in the Pennsylvania railroad shops cuts 125 workers in Fort Wayne Lima and Valparaiso. Car shops reduce to fifty hours weekly while locomotive shops face the same fifty hour schedule. The retrenchment takes effect Monday.
A petition from Hebron requests creation of a gravel road connection in Eagle township Lake county to link Hebron to Lowell. If approved by the Lake county commissioners the route would provide a continuous gravel road extending toward Crown Point.
