The Hobart Township Farmers Institute held at Odd Fellows hall drew a large attendance for a program with high school vocal numbers and Miss Florence Banks on instrumental pieces. State speakers included Miss Gertrude McCheyne on The Rights of the Child and Mr. J J Doan on The Dairy and the Dairy Cow.
Saturday evening about thirty friends surprised Miss Carrie Bullock at her home gifting cut glass silver linen and other items. On Tuesday she left for Wichita Kansas to meet the prospective groom Mr George Winters. The couple plans to reside in Oklahoma City with many Hobart friends wishing them happiness. Miss Bullock was escorted to Chicago by her mother.
President Taft plans to reappoint Indiana postmasters whose terms expire unless charges are sustained. The policy covers all postmasters with terms ending before March 4 and signals future patronage plans in Indiana.
Paul Newman expands by purchasing the corner lot housing J J Wood's store and plans to move his hardware business there later. Wood, longtime Hobart merchant active in civic affairs, retires with possession set for next September. Newman and Brahst began building a garage on the lot with a concrete 100 foot floor and modern oil tanks underground.
The United States Courts of Customs Appeals hold that eggs from China, broken from shells, canned and frozen, incur a duty of five cents a dozen. The importer argued eggs were birds on the free list, but the court rejected that claim, deeming a hen a bird and an egg an egg whether in or out of the shell.
Alarmed by four attorney arrests in the past year the St. Joseph county bar association moves to bar objectionable figures. It outlines a plan requiring bar admission applicants to undergo a searching inquiry into their moral standing.
Former Indiana congressman Charles B. Landis has moved to Delaware and joined Dupont Powder as a publicity official. He will oversee general publicity and prepare a company history from 1802 to the present.
The Methodist and several affiliated churches will host a week of Union Revival Meetings led by Evangelist S B Shaw and wife. Delegations from Merrillville East Gary Valparaiso Wheeler and nearby areas are expected at Friday’s all day union meeting. Children’s meetings close each school day and prayer service runs at 2 30 each afternoon except Saturday.
S. E. Swaim editor and publisher of the Hammond News was named deputy oil inspector for Lake county by State Oil Inspector Fry of Fort Wayne. The position is valued at roughly fifteen hundred to two thousand dollars yearly in fees.
In the township spelling contest held at the new school auditorium, Grace Stuart, Elsie Mundell, and Anna Kesela took the top honors and will represent the township at Crown Point on February 4. A Sixth grade contest crowned Mildred Tabbert as best speller.
Senator Frank Gavit of Whiting introduces a bill in the senate to raise salaries for county clerks sheriffs and recorders in Lake Vigo and Madison counties a similar measure failed to reach a vote last session. Officers have campaigned in Indianapolis to support the proposal.
The 1910 report by Sergeant William Miller of Gary records 2 949 arrests on 51 charges and 14 felonies. Fines amount to 12 571.52 with 318 prisoners jailed for non payment, 412 confined overall, 73 sentenced and 26 bound over. Town board reappoints officers and plans town hall and street widening work.
John Hughes a 46 year old veteran officer on the Whiting police force shot himself at his home in Whiting last week. Officials believe fear of rabies drove the act. Earlier in service he fought with foreigners during which his little finger was bitten.
Federal authorities decide to build a temporary slaughter house at Valparaiso after tuberculin testing of cattle in Laporte Porter and Lake counties. Existing slaughter houses are only in Fort Wayne and Lafayette.
The Hobart board met in adjourned session Monday night. Alta Halstead was appointed clerk pro tem in Clerk Jacobson’s absence. The main aim was the financial report but delay occurred. Electric light meter applications were received and a street opening proposed by Aleya was referred to a committee. Engineer Knight’s sewer plan work continues for later submission. Remains of Mrs Sadie Price of Chicago were brought for funeral services by Rev Servies. she wished burial beside her mother here. Miss Mabel Kent and Mark Metzler married in Chicago.
