Hilo farmers discuss the pineapple industry cannery plan
Hilo Agricultural Society heard C. H. Bentley of the California Fruit Canners Association outline how 200 to 300 acres of pineapples in two to three years could justify a cannery. He urged central plants with branch operations, noted first‑year costs around 75 000 dollars, and said 1 000 tons of fruit must be secured, drawing from Maui Kona and Oahu to supply a 25 000 to 50 000 case output.
