Shipwrecked crew guided by volcanic beacon reaches Hawaii
Eight shipwrecked French sailors from the Connetable de Richemont landed at Kailua after splitting from two other boats during a voyage from the Frigate Shoals. They reported no casualties, with one boat missing. The Iwilani picked up the eight men and ferried them to Honolulu to reunite with their captain. The voyage began after the vessel ran onto rocks near the French Frigate Shoals on October. The beacon light from the Mauna Loa eruption aided their drift to safety. The Falls of Clyde will depart Saturday for San Francisco carrying sugar and firewood. Public notices followed about lighthouse control transfer to the U.S. government in January and a plan to station a revenue cutter in Hawaiian waters.
