The Poacher from Lamitchal A Farce of Violets and Revenge
A young girl picks violets beside a wall and meets a man who urges mercy then generosity. Years later she, now grown, learns his identity at a party and devises a plan to avenge the past, only to marry him. In the conservatory he had earlier shown kindness, the violet episode echoes at their wedding.

Hawaii growers push tariff fight for coffee
Hawaii coffee growers plan to send Jared Smith, director of the federal Experiment Station, to Washington to advocate a tariff on imported coffee. Smith sails February 15, absent about two months. Higgins and Van Dine will run the station in his absence. About twenty growers are coordinated, seeking a three to five cent per pound tariff to shield Hawaii coffee from Central and South American competition, matching sugar’s protection, with Porto Rico already active in the lobbying. Governor Winthrop leads the Porto Rico delegation. Separately, J B Castle, J P Cooke, and George Thielen will start a fifteen acre tobacco plantation near Hamakua Station to explore tobacco potential in Hawaii, with plans to expand if successful and to support small growers with drying and curing houses. The Hamakua soil is deemed suitable for tobacco by Jared Smith.
