The 1905 act, effective April 3, imposes a $200 annual tax on any social club furnishing meals and intoxicating liquors. It allows bona fide clubs to distribute meals and liquor to members without further license fees, as long as liquor is incidental to the club’s main purpose and not aimed at evading license laws. Governor Carter approved the measure on April 3, 1905.
Honolulu April 5 J C Davis of Kauai has been appointed Superintendent of Public Instruction to succeed A T Atkinson who resigned The new superintendent graduated from Fish University with a BA in 1885 and earned life teaching certificates from Texas in 1861 and Hawaii in 1897 The Board of Education granted him a life certificate for Hawaii the day of his appointment Davis has served thirteen years in the Department of Education largely as principal at Hanalgi Kattal and was named school inspector in September last year

In St Louis and Chicago voters backed Democratic candidates. In St Louis the party elected its mayoral nominee. In Chicago Judge Dunne was elected mayor by a 25 000 vote majority. Democrats nationwide achieved broad municipal wins.
On Saturday last at Waiakea on Reed's Bay road an elderly Hawaiian woman died and is said to be 104 years old. Paakuku claimed to have been a lady in waiting to Queen Kamehameha the Great. She was the last of her race with no immediate family surviving. Known in Honolulu to Queen Liliokalani, she recalled early island history and lived an active life without glasses and with all teeth. She expressed tiredness of life shortly before death.
