Funeral Held for Lee Bristol, Bristol-Myers Chairman

Funeral services were held in New York City for Lee Hastings Bristol 69 chairman of Bristol Myers Co who died of a heart ailment Saturday night at Point Pleasant Hospital. He lived in Bay Head and was to receive Beach Boros Local 06 PBA Citizen of the Year posthumously. His son Lee H. Bristol Jr. accepted the award in Sea Girl. Bristol led the company to a 1957 board chairmanship after nine years as president and held multiple civic roles including U S Tercentenary Commission Ways and Means chairmanship and United Cerebral Palsy board directorship. He served in World War I as a naval aviator and was survived by his son Frederick W. Bristol a brother William of Switzerland and six grandchildren.

Bristol-Myers Co. chairman Lee Bristol dies at home

Lee Hastings Bristol, board chairman of Bristol-Myers Co, died Saturday. He helped grow the company into a leading pharmaceutical firm and was active in philanthropy and civil rights, donating 400000 to Hamilton College in memory of his father. He served as national brotherhood chairman of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and as a director of the National Urban League.

Designate Schools As Public Shelters

Four Hillside public schools Washington Harden Looker A P Morris and Hillside High were named as potential community shelters by the federal government per Sept 12 advice from Commissioner Desch. The board authorized use of the schools and signing of papers, and adopted a rule to forgo bid advertising for cafeteria supplies.

Hillside Democrats honor candidates at Autumn Festival

The Hillside Democratic Club recognized Police Commissioner John A. Desch Special Township Attorney Robert Diamond and John C. Pozar at its Autumn Festival at the Polish American Club. Peggy Roche introduced the candidates to over 250 guests. Desch praised the Democratic administration's projects and public services while Diamond outlined efforts to block Route 78. Pozar urged continued administration for future progress.

Beauty Contest Judges Named for Miss Hillside

Fire Captain Robert Sonntag and co chair Robert Liegerman announced the Miss Hillside judges Walter Cocker Elizabeth photographer Jean Rae Turner of The Daily Journal Elizabeth and Steve Hollis WJRZ disc jockey. Hank Gordon will MC the event with three vocalists Mona Salzman Hank Gordon and Anthony Bruno. Winners receive trophies with two runners up and merchants donate prizes. The local winner advances to Miss Union County Fair in Elizabeth with a prize trip to Puerto Rico for two. Admission is free.

Library Council Plans For Season At Saybrook School

The Senior Library Council of Saybrook A.P. Morris School P.T.A. met September 25 to organize the coming year. Forty mothers volunteered to staff the library under Miss Abi Rosenberg and Mrs Berge Parigan. The library opens for students starting October 2.

Road Employes Seek Pay Raises at Township Conference

The Road Department, led by Superintendent Anthony Morriello, asks the Township Committee for a formal pay scale with set maximums to be reached within four to seven years. They seek raises for 1963 due to rising living costs and request five additional workers to handle regular and emergency duties, noting some members have not reached maximum pay after 12+ years. A vacancy from John Urbanski's recent death is to be filled.

A board of education proposal to spend 69500 from surplus funds to expand Hillside Ave School playground failed 765 yes 633 no. Polls across seven sites showed mixed support with Hillside Ave 222 yes 129 no. Board president Roy called the issue finished and no re submission planned.
