PAL Membership Open to Hillside Youth Ages 10 to 16

PAL invites Hillside residents aged 10 to 16 to join at the PAL Building 274 Hillside Ave. Registration runs Tuesday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Dues are $3.00 with insurance. Children 10 to 13 must be accompanied by an adult. building hours differ by age group.

Zients Named Executive Head of Gimbels New York Stores

Bernard B. Lients of Hillside, vice president of Gimbel Brothers, Inc., has been named Executive Head of Gimbels New York and suburban stores. He succeeds the late Julius Schutzman. Zients, 49, previously headed the corporate buying office and has 25 years in retail merchandising with City Stores Mercantile, Hahne and Company, Abraham and Straus, and the AMC. He is active in charity, serves as trustee of Bnai Jeshurun and supports Boy Scouts. The Zientses reside at 166 Windsor Way.

School Board seeks voter OK for Hillside playground expansion

The Board of Education explains plans to buy the Merkle property on Maple Ave to enlarge Hillside Avenue School play area from 2.9 to 3.7 acres. Voters will decide September 257 from 2 to 9 PM, authorizing 69750 to purchase and improve the land with fencing, drainage, and paving.

Democratic Headquarters Opening At Liberty Avenue

More than 100 people attended the opening of the Democratic Headquarters at 1277 Liberty Ave. Speakers included Township Committee candidate John A. Desch, Police Commissioner John A Desch, Special Township Attorney Robert Diamond, and Tax Collector candidate John C. Pozar. Desch spoke on park facilities, juvenile aid bureau, and county mental illness registration. Diamond outlined the Route 78 realignment fight with local partners. Also listed were Lillian W. Egolf, Ralph Orisello, Richard J. Barrett, Samuel Davidson, and Samuel Di Martino as other candidates in the slate.
