A two day car wash fundraiser is set for September 14 and 15 to benefit the Hillside High School Senior Prom fund. Cars will be washed at owners homes for a 100 dollar fee. interested owners may call EL 2-3187 EL 4-0179 MA 6-5450 or WA 31724. Campaign remarks praise Mancuso and Schulman as capable local leaders and volunteers with extensive public service and business backgrounds.
Democratic Township Committee candidates Charles Manuseo and Jack Schulman announced that Finance Commissioner Monroe Ackerman will manage their campaign. Public Affairs Commissioner Robert Diamond will oversee publicity.

Albert Badar announces the tenth annual Hillside Little League awards banquet will be held Saturday evening in Hillside High School cafeteria. Knights of Columbus, Bnai Brith, and Yankees teams, champions of respective leagues, will receive trophies along with outstanding pitchers and batters. Twelve-year-olds aging out will receive graduation certificates. Admission is free for participants with an accompanying adult.
Gen Alfred Gruenther, president of the American Red Cross and former WWII hero, will address Elizabethtown Chapter at 8:30 pm on Tuesday September 17. The event at Nicholas Murray Butler School on Union Avenue is open to the public and welcomes attendees from Hillside and nearby areas.
Robert Dischler aged 24 of 4 Looker Street received a civilian gold medal from the New Jersey State PHA at its annual banquet on September 10 at the 500 Club in Atlantic City. The citation praised his role in stopping a holdup at the National State Bank of Elizabeth on December 5. He wrestled a gun from a bandit, shot him in the stomach, and fought the second robber, who fled with $30,000 left behind.
The Rosary Society of Christ The King Church held a Monday night executive board meeting in the school office. The program for the year was discussed and set Up. The first regular meeting is planned for Monday night October 7 with member inductions at 8 o'clock in the church.
In line with a new state law effective September 1, the Board of Education approves the Sterneedle Gun tuberculin test for all pupils in grades 1, 5, 9 and 12. Dr. Wayne T. Branom notes the test is painless, free, and administered by the schools’ medical staff. Positive reactions trigger parental notification and a chest x ray.
James P. Whitlock proposes using two Hillside school sites Calvin Coolidge and AP Morris for public pools to save the town over 200000. The plan, backed by Home Owners Action Association, would convert unused school play areas into two 100 by 60 foot pools with reinforced walls and shared facilities, managed by recreation department staff with a per day user fee and free sunbathing access for non swimmers.
Hillside residents file 1500 signatures for a referendum on a proposed 335000 municipal swimming pool. Commissioner Mancuso says a referendum at the November 5 general election would delay plans to open the pool next summer. the move would guide public sentiment, not bind officials.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lesnik host an Israel Bond reception at 252 Belleview Tel on Tuesday September 24 at 8 p m in honor of Shulamith Spector Israel’s first woman industrial engineer. Spector born 1930 in Jerusalem led varied roles from Haganah editor to national survey director and Israel Bond collaborator. Jerome M. Flen of South Orange chairs the Essex County Israel Bond Committee.
Plans announced for a September 17 dinner honoring State Senator Nelson F. Stamler with United States Senator Jacob Javits as guest speaker at the Elizabeth Carteret Hotel. The event coalesces with a statewide eye health screening program during the week of September 22 led by the Medical Society of New Jersey and allied groups to detect glaucoma cataracts and other eye diseases, with screenings open to uninsured residents and centers set up statewide including Elizabeth General Hospital on September 23 to 27.
