Hillside Western Night set by Little League Auxiliaries

Hillside hosts the Little League Western Night on October 17 at 9 p.m. at the Blue Ribbon on Hollywood Ave. Event organized by the Women’s Auxiliary with tickets to be sold at the Little League Dinner on September 10. Local police report multiple incidents including a bogus check arrest, assorted thefts, vandalism, auto theft, and a lost child during the period.

Problem Solving Council Formed At Hillside Meeting

At the Hillside Township meeting on September 1 the formation of a council on community affairs was announced to address problems facing the town. The council will be headed by Mayor Carmen J. Ferrigno and include Dr. Anthony Avella, Dr. Joseph Peyser, Police Chief George Shelbourne, Rev. Richard Fox, and PTA representatives.

Hela Yungst Prepares For Miss America Night

Atlantic City welcomes Hillside entrant Hela Yungst as New Jersey’s Miss America hopeful. A mix and mingle dinner let the 50 contestants meet, with Hela praising the group and noting fearlessness about controversial questions. Production steps began with registration and press interviews followed by practice. Bert Parks met the contestants Tuesday as they continued rehearsals and preparations for final decision.

Purse Snatching on Dover Avenue Injures Mrs Jeanette

Mrs. Lillian Jeanette of 213 Dover Ave was knocked down by a man who snatched her purse on Dover near Maple after 5 30 p m last Wednesday. The man, described as a 20 to 25 year old black man, fled in a car with a second black driver. Loss included credit cards a checkbook and 5 70. She sustained injuries to her left elbow but refused medical aid.

Arrest of Philip P. Komisar on marijuana charges

Philip P. Komisar, 20, was arrested at 1600 Maple Ave on a warrant for possession of marijuana. Detectives Messano and Milburn, Patrolman Cann, Sgt. Stern, and Matron Groeger found marijuana and three pipes in the apartment. He is held without bail.

Hillside schools begin Phase II drug education workshops

Elementary and secondary teachers at Hillside schools attend inaugurating sessions led by Dr. Anthony A. Avella and P T A presidents. Secondary staff view Drug Abuse Call to Action and hear Dr. George Gordon on Legal Drugs as part of New Jersey mandated Phase II training. Readings and talks also cover teaching reading with Dr. Donald B. Rice sharing experience in special education.

Three Men Arrested in Hillside Ave Stolen Goods Case

Three men led by driver Paul Reynolds were arrested on Hillside Ave and Hilldale Place for possession of stolen property. Ralph Colatrera and Israel David, with David charged for possessing a concealed weapon a straight razor. Officers Seale and Van Dean held them without bail amid narcotics-use notes.

Injured in Car Accidents On Liberty Avenue and Liberty Street

Steven A. Fromm, 19, of 1455 Bond St, injured his right leg and left thigh abrasions when his car was hit on Liberty Ave at William St at 1 15 p m by Joseph M. Romeo, 42, of 358 Long Ave. Fromm to Elizabeth General Hospital for treatment. Andrea Bottone, eight, of 14862 Hiawatha Ave, bruised both elbows when her bicycle struck Detective Anthony Messano, 34. Witnesses said she darted from between parked cars.
