Gary Lehner of Hillside Township announces in a statement that politics should focus on issues, not personal attacks. He promotes the newly formed Independent Party, claims Democrats ignore the party, and asserts his bid for township committee to push town improvements.
Dr. Anthony A. Avella Hillside Public Schools superintendent will receive the UNICO Service Above Self Award at the 10th annual Dinner Dance at College Inn on November 1. Bell cites Avella’s decades of service from social studies teacher to superintendent and his impact on youth and community groups.
Vito Carulli 34 of 601 Chapman Street suffered back and internal injuries after being hit by a truck on Chestnut Ave at Hillside Ave. He was admitted to St Elizabeth Hospital. The truck, operated by Luca Barier via, 34, of 6935 20th Street Newark, for Bon Construction Co., was involved. Carulli said he did not notice the vehicle.

Menza accepts responsibility and offers public debate while citing higher costs from County Board of Education and public safety. Witte urges trimming every small expense and cites welfare director salary as a target.
Mayor Alexander J. Menza and Commissioner 1 Late Share rebut Republican charges on Hillside taxes. They argue 70 percent of the municipal budget funds public safety and 65 percent of remaining expenses go to library, insurance, hydrants, lighting and sanitation. They accuse Whitlock and GOP candidates of misleading the public and offer no concrete budget cuts.
The Times recalls Sam Dubow as head coach of Hillside High School’s 1933 first football team. He planned organized and financed the squad’s debut, loaning $3000 for initial equipment while the board provided no funds. The sport played behind Coe Ave School and later Conant St Field was built with WPA labor. Dubow has lived in town fifty years with his wife at 143 Fairbanks St.

Al Zside, owner of Pampered at 1123 Woodruff Ave, plans to debut a rebuilt engine at Race Way Park Englishtown this Sunday. He aims for a low elapsed time in class C G with about 500 horsepower, after investing $5,000.
