Union County Board of Elections reports 11 485 registered for the November 4 presidential election, a Hillside record with 1 439 more than 1948. The 1951 tally was 9 951, with most gains in districts trending Democratic and notable increases in districts six seven eight nine and fifteen.
The Port of New York Authority proposed a full reopening of Newark but the Mayors Committee on Newark Airport adopted a resolution opposing it. Commis sener Milton B. Conford led the resolution, citing noise and danger, while Elizabeth Mayor James T. Kirk urged legal action with Newark’s Corporation Counsel Charles M. Handler. Data on legal action due by November 6. Hillside official Raymond R. King warned of increased westbound flights impacting Weequahic Newark neighborhoods. The committee praised State Commissioner Charles R. Erdman Jr. for backing an all weather airport at Lakewood.
Citizens For Eisenhower Group volunteers report strong support from house-to-house canvassing in Hillside. George Burry, chairman, cites a rising tide of Democrat voters favoring a change in national administration and mentions a family switching from Democratic loyalty to Eisenhower.
A conference among Ray D. Matthews of Midway Motors Albert Schoen and Henry Goldher reached an agreement to provide equal Election Day support to voters. Midway Motors DeSoto and Plymouth dealers will offer telephone desk space cars and chauffeurs to both parties with workers at 1433 North Broad Street. Voters needing transport call WAverly 3-3500.
Mundet Cork Corp faces ongoing local air pollution fights after the U S Supreme Court refused to review a conviction. The Hillside ordinance was upheld and penalties increased for repeat offenses, with fines rising from 100 to 200 dollars and jail terms from 30 to 90 days.
William Gural urged Hill side voters to require Carmen Ferrigno to resign as a Hillside High School teacher if elected to the Township Committee. Gural argued that holding both taxpayer funded positions creates a financial conflict and pledged to avoid any town financial ties himself. He asked Ferrigno to respond whether he will resign from the Board of Education role.
The Times corrected that Max Schleifer, finance chairman of the Board of Education, did not recommend approval of the auditor’s report proposing an increase in school fire insurance. No such endorsement was made.
Mayor Robert C. Kirkpatrick proclaims a two minute period from 12 noon to 12:02 PM on October 24 1952 for a Period of Prayer for World Peace. He urges all citizens to pray for peace in their own church according to conscience and with God’s aid.
Officials of the New Jersey State League of Municipalities announce that Harry C. Meltzer and Peter G. Humanik will speak on a panel about establishing a recreation commission. The panel is part of the league convention in Atlantic City and is set for Thursday afternoon November 20 at the Haddon Hall Hotel.
The Italian Troubadors performed Italian songs and dances before Hillside Rotary Tuesday, receiving favorable reaction. Performers included soprano Aurora Gras Olita and partner Renato, dancers, and Carmen Polzo on accordion, with arrangements by Dr. Wayne T. Branom. A plaque honoring deceased Rotarians was accepted by President Ralph Einwalter, prepared by Percy Shaffer Joseph Einroth Martin Preis and Anton A. Vit Jr.

A hand made Security Council replica by 76 year old Burnett Cole drew attention. it won first prize in Newark Welfare Federation’s Elderly Hobby Exhibit. Mrs. Isaac Mandlebaum highlighted Hadassah’s UN Week observance and goals.
A Hillside retailer titled The Solomon Store promotes work clothes and shoes including dress shoes and rubber footwear. Located at 1299 Liberty Ave with phone WA 3-9507, the ad positions it as one of Hillside's good stores.
Carmen J. Ferrigno Republican candidate for Township Committee accuses two Democratic members of seeking to gain control of the township by nominating a Democratic candidate. He claims pressure to switch parties, defends his own stance, and cites McNamara and D Amiano as targets of political maneuvering.
Township Committee added John P. Chef de Hotel Alois J Stier and Walter W Wempa to the Police Department. James J Foran’s appointment remains in abeyance until the Fire Department list is certified. Four members of Boy Scout Troop 94 will travel to Camp Kilmer for Scout training and a brief look at Army life. Nat Gold from the troop committee will accompany the group, including Stephen Gold Donald Meslar Ronald Werber Melvin Pell and Robert Burns.
