Hillside Master Plan Seeks Change Despite Old Street Layouts

Planner William Queale Jr of Alvin E. Gershen Associates outlines how Hillside’s 1850 street alignments largely persist, despite rising car use. Traffic on the N Broad St overpass spikes to 19,000 daily, with 8,000 vehicles on either side, and Route 22 over Liberty Ave narrows from six to two lanes. He urges studies of land use, growth, and transit to craft a new master plan while noting two barriers Route 22 and the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Mayor Robert Diamond calls the plan essential to define Hillside’s direction as zoning restrictions liberalize, industrial ratables rise, and 1965 permits total $1,242,000.
