Corsair Pilot Makes 63rd Landing Aboard USS Franklin D. Roosevelt

Ensign Bernard E. Goehring of Hillside Navy, flying a Chance-Vought F4U Corsair, completed his 28,000th landing on the flight deck of the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was his third carrier landing and 710 hours in the air. He trained at Corpus Christi and is son of Mr. and Mrs. B. Goehring of 47 Looker Street.

New Civic League Formed By Youth In Town

The Organization of the Young Voters held a meeting last Thursday in Hungarian Workmen's Hall White Street. About 25 members attended and officers were elected Richard Goldfinger president Anthony D Amiano vice president Ann Vitello secretary and Frank Dufek treasurer. The group aims to stimulate youth voting civic involvement cooperate on a social center for the township discuss youth topics and endorse candidates for the Board of Education and Township Committee. Final tribute to Fire Chief George Doree at Hillside service

Fire Chief George Doree aged 62 received a large farewell from Hillside officials and residents at the Haeberle and Barth Home for Funerals Ley ington. Dr Arthur Northwood presided with Masonic services and Evergreen Cemetery interment followed. Escort included 14 firemen and pallbearers were 6 firemen led by James McGuire. Doree, a lifelong Hillside native, died Monday at Beth Israel Hospital Newark after illness following fires at Sun Tube Corp and Mander Cork Corp. He had served since 1922 becoming chief in 1943 and held multiple safety and civic roles. He is survived by his wife Julia, daughter June Waters and sister Florence.

Newark man charged with red light violation

Morris Ruggiero of 23 Bergen Street Newark was arrested by Patrolman Robert Mason for passing a red light at Long and Liberty avenues and driving without a license. He was released on a summons to appear in police court Saturday October 14.

Hillside Soldier Wounded in Action in Korea

Pfc. Joseph F. Ackerman, 21, son of Mrs. Emma Ackerman, Hillside, was wounded in Korea while with Company C, First Marine Division. A shell fragment neared him, his legs briefly paralyzed. hospitalized near advancing forces, he hoped to rejoin his unit. He is a 1946 Hillside High School graduate and former W. W. Boone employee.
