New Jersey Bell Seeks Higher Rates to Fund Expansion
The New Jersey Bell Telephone Company asks for an additional 9.8 million dollars in annual intrastate revenues as it battles rising costs and uneven demand. Officials note 600,000 new phones since the postwar program and 6,000 applications for new service with 55,000 awaiting facilities. Despite a quarter‑billion postwar buildout, the firm says earnings must rise to attract investment and meet growing public needs.

New Jersey Telephone Company Seeks Rate Increases
The firm proposes a 10 cent monthly rise for basic party line bills and 15 cents for individual line customers. Business lines would go up 25 cents, with higher extension rates, overtime, intrastate toll adjustments, shorter initial toll periods, and a 10 cent local call charge. The company argues public support for quality service and fair pricing from a financially sound, progressive company.
