Governor Richard Hughes spoke at the Hillside Education Association dinner at the Blue Shutter Inn urging expansion of New Jersey’s educational system to admit all qualified state high school graduates to college. He pressed for more education funding and spoke in defense of free speech in schools while noting negotiations for higher wages and family health coverage for teachers.
In Hillside, Democrats Carmen Ferrigno and Robert Diamond scored a decisive landslide over Republicans Mack Tarnoff and Arnold Witte, securing the Township Committee majority for 1966. Ferrigno led with 5,374 votes to Diamond’s 5,308, while Tarnoff had 3,618 and Witte 3,824. turnout neared 10,000 of about 12,000 registered. Overall, Republicans failed to win a majority in any district except four. Hughes led the Sheriff race by more than two to one. The new committee will include Anton Vitz, Monroe Ackerman, Robert Diamond, Carmen Ferrigno, and Joe Ram.
Dr Warren H Knauer of 245 Exeter Way was elected vice chairman of the Executive Committee for the Union County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. He has been active in the organization for two years and has served on the committees.
Robert Diamond and Carmen Ferrigno thank voters and local groups including LRAD Young Democrats Regular Democratic Organization Independents and Republicans for a great victory. Also cited are Sam Katz municipal chairman and strong community backing.
Three people were hurt when high winds blew a hanging traffic light at North and Westminster causing a collision on North Ave. Patricia Leary 23 of 1426 Lexington Pl Elizabeth, Joseph Fernicola 40 of 1070 Voorhees St and Rose Marie Fernicola 40 suffered head neck and body injuries. They were all admitted to St Elizabeth Hospital.
Hillside High will mail first report cards Thursday November 4 under principal Dr Walter Krumbiegel. Each student gets separate cards for each marking period and cards need not be returned. New data processing equipment records attendance and builds class rosters. Report card dates for 1965 66 are November 4 December 21 February 10 March 31 May 19 June 23.
Members of Col Norman Meranus Post 78 and Hillside Post 573 in JWV voted unanimously to merge into a single post to be known as Col Norman Meganus Hillside Post 78 JWV. A joint meeting is set for Thursday evening November 18 at 8 30 PM in the Hillside State Bank Community Room 122 Liberty Ave. The new post will debut Welcome to Hillside Safe Drivers signs at 1562 Summit Ave and at North Broad Looker Sts near Evergreen Cemetery. Hospital parties will continue on the first Thursday each month at the VA Hospital East Orange. The Woman's Club of Hillside Inc will hold Guest Day on November 9 1965 at 1 30 PM at Elizabeth Town and Country Club with President Wayne Branom presiding and Newark State College Union director Jack Platt to render selections.
On the first and third Sundays at Temple Shomrei Torah 910 Salem Ave adults join a morning program beginning November 7 with Talis and Tellin Minyan Service Bagels and Lex Breakfast and Conversation with the Rabbi led by Rabbi H. Beryl Lasker. Hebrew classes for adults include a Beginners class Tuesdays 1:30 to 3:00 taught by Rosalyn Laster, Intermediate Wednesdays 7:00 to 8:30 taught by Newson Burgstein, and Advanced Hebrew Mondays 7:00 to 8:30 taught by Burgstein.
Two Hillside youths have enlisted in the Marine Corps according to the Recruiting Office in Union. They are James Michael Eynith eons of Mr and Mrs Bartard Lynch of 348 Long Valley Dene Menus Betell, sonia My and Mrs Adenus Betielot 408 Long Aves.
