Hillside Township candidates face six questions

The Times conducted separate interviews with Hillside Township Committee candidates from both parties. Excerpts cover education, juvenile crime, qualifications, Liberty Avenue widening, incentives for new business, and long term town planning.

Hillside seeks second senior citizen minibus through Rotary grant

Hillside officials led by Township Clerk John Kulish, Grantsman Mike Stec and Community Center Director Dave Klurman pushed a plan to obtain a new 20 seat minibus with two wheelchair spots and a hydraulic lift. Rotary sponsorship was secured after DOT denied prior grant. The Township Committee approved the measure, amid questions on maintenance costs and staffing. Right turns on red were banned at three intersections following a Traffic Safety Bureau recommendation.

Hillside Police to Run Elementary Safety Programs

The Hillside Police Department in cooperation with the Hillside school system will conduct safety programs for all elementary students. Activities cover safe routes to school, intersection awareness, and where to cross streets. George Washington School holds the event on November 21 at 9 30 a.m. Harden-Locker School on November 22 at 10 a.m. Lieutenant Paul DeGraw oversees the Traffic Bureau.

Prosecutor Criticizes Hillside Case Handling by Republican Chair

Union County prosecutor John Stamler tempered GOP claims of impropriety involving Hillside Mayor and Democratic Assembly candidate Vincent Baldassano. Stamler said transferring the case to the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice does not indicate an investigation has begun and will be reviewed for basis. He also criticized Marge Bieg for releasing information to the press before notifying authorities.
