Parade Route and Memorial Service Details

A community event schedule lists a 2:00 Interfaith Memorial Service at the War Memorial Building and a 12:00 noon line-up at the High School, with the Community Center hosting parade activities.

Hillside business leaders push municipal parking to relieve jam

About a dozen Hillside businessmen urge the town to buy vacant lots or tear down buildings for municipal parking. They argue the one hour limits and scarce spaces deter customers and propose reserved space lots near Mayfair Theatre and other downtown sites. Some favor meters, others large lots, all calling for a solution to growing car congestion.

Bergman Candidate for Arts Degree at Centenary College

Hillside Post Office Closed for Memorial Day

Memorial Day closes the Hillside post office with one noon collection. Also notes cheerleader tryouts for Pop Warner girls aged 10 to 13 on June 4 7 and 10 at 3 30 pm at Little League Field House Gard Avenue under high school instructors.

Battery stolen and minors involved in town incidents

A series of petty crimes and accidents reported in the town include a $25 car battery stolen from a Hillside High School parked vehicle, a nine year old girl hit by a bottle near Hillside Ave, a $65 bicycle theft from 111 Pennsylvania Ave, and a minor drunken driving arrest on Liberty Ave. An accident on Winans Ave near Fabyan Place left William Brenner with knee and foot injuries after a collision with Leo Feirst. Frank Barnes reported a brick thrown at a Somerset Bus Co bus on Route 22 at the Bloy St overpass.

Nab Man In Theft Attempt At Kesselman’s Deli

William A Payne 45 of 188 Keer Ave Newark was caught Thursday evening at Kesselman’s Deli 1554 Maple Ave holding wine and whiskey by Patrolman Roswell Donah and Kenneth Lull. He faced breaking entering and larceny charges and is held without bail.

Collision injures two in Hillside and Broad Street crash

Two injured refused medical aid after a collision on Hillside Ave and N Broad St. They were passengers in Alfredo Herrera's car, 36, of 1043 Kilsyth Road Elizabeth, turning left from N Broad St toward Hillside Ave when Frank Ferranti's car, 40, of 15 Dod Place, exited a gasoline station.

At a Regular Hillside Republican Club meeting on May 20 at the Blue Ribbon Inn, President Edward Zipf declared that rumors of a party split are false and urged unity to unseat the Democratic machine. He praised uniting Republicans and independents and declined Township Committeeman candidacy to focus on building the Hillside GOP.

Memorial Day Parade Sets 60 Units From Hillside Area

Leaves High School at 12 30 P M for the 5th annual Memorial Day Parade on May 31 1971 with 60 participating organizations. Parade chairman Dominick Zema and Jaycees, Master of ceremonies Martin Prince, and reviewing officials including Walter Howell and retired Captain Klages will lead. About 7 000 flags will be distributed. rain date June 5 1971. Participating groups include Hillside clubs, fire and police units, marching bands, Boy and Girl Scouts, Junior Miss Phylis Fisehler, various cadet and military units, and dignitaries like Mayor Corwick.

Man Receives Careless Driving Summons After City Crash

William L. Robinson, 38, of 408 Chandler Ave Linden, was issued a summons for careless driving after a collision on Hillside Ave Chestnut Ave last Sunday. His car traveling south on Chestnut St struck a tractor trailer driven by David A Meyers 24 of Wap wallopen Pa Meyers suffered a forehead bump left knee and hip bruises while Robinson had a forehead cut.
