Hillside veterans organizations will lead the town’s Memorial Day parade and services on May 30. The D A V chapter will organize the parade from the Honor Roll at Hillside and Liberty, with wreath laying by Daniel Selb. The procession moves through Hillside to Maple, Clark, Russell Looker Park, Mertz, then to Evergreen Cemetery for services. the memorial is directed by the D A V and pastors. A Sunday memorial service is planned May 28 at 8 o clock in the Church of Christ the King.

School plant plan clears path to public vote
After adjournment, Mayor James J Holsing and Councilman Raymond R King endorsed the school building program to be presented to voters in a June 13 referendum. The plan includes an addition to the high school and multi purpose rooms at Harden Looker George Washington and Calvin Coolidge Schools. Angelo Merchio 29 of Newark pleaded guilty before Magistrate Kremer to grand larceny over copper tubing and wire taken from Hatfield Wire and Cable Co on September 12 and October 19, 1949 and was held for Union County Grand Jury. Two unlicensed trucks owned by Wendel Body Co. at 464 Coit Street Irvington were found damaged in the rear yard in Hillside early yesterday morning. Police say the trucks were driven around after closing, crashed together, causing about 200 dollars in damage. Entry appears to have been gained through the railroad siding.

Heroism Cited From Greenlanes Last Cruise Sub Rescue
Carl Wheat of 241 Winans Avenue is cited for heroism in the 1949 Greenland Sea sinking of the U S S Sea. The Cochino, north of the Arctic Circle, fought a battery fire and hydrogen explosion for fourteen hours under Commander Rafael Benitez. Seven were lost but rescue operations saved survivors, as recounted by Commander Lederer in The Last Cruise.

Girls' Club Holds Cancer Fund Event
