Hillside Moves Toward Public Works Department

Selected For UN Pilgrimage

Marc Bernstein son of Mr and Mrs Milton Bernstein of 249 Williamson Ave has been chosen by Mr Sinal Lodge of Odd Fellows from Hillside High School as a participant in the 6th annual U N Pilgrimage for Youth. He will visit New York June 21 to 27 as one of over 1000 student observers from the United States and Canada. The project is sponsored by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. In the Fall he will report on his participation.

Planning grant to Hillside approved for two year program

Washington The Town Ship of Hillside will share a federal grant of 93240 with seven New Jersey communities for comprehensive planning. The program covers base maps economic base population traffic land use and zoning plus a community development plan over two years. Other aid recipients include Byram Township Caldwell Borough Collingswood Borough Dept Ford Township Montague Township and Rutherford Borough.

Dads Booster Club Hosts Second Sports Luncheon

The Dads Booster Club held its second annual sports luncheon at the High School on May 9 honoring members and coaches from wrestling soccer cross country track golf and cheer. Awards went to seniors and coaches. speakers included Herbert Palmer and Ralph Armenio. Sidney Englander chaired the event with Moe Blerman Franklin Feltman and Joseph Silver as vice chairs.

Hillside Orchestra Spring Concert May 14

The Hillside Community Orchestra presents its Spring Concert May 14 in the High School auditorium with no admission charge. Conductor Michael Buglio leads the program featuring Larry Frank as clarinet soloist. The High School Chorus, directed by Howard Kravitz, is also highlighted.

The 1964 55 Hillside Lodge installation on May 11 named Robert Diamond president and a slate of vice presidents secretaries and treasurer. Diamond will become the 22nd Hillside Lodge president, with extensive local service and committee roles noted.

Hillside Safety Council Checks 150 Bicycles

About 150 bikes were inspected at the annual Bicycle Check sponsored by the Hillside Safety Council on Saturday May 9. Volunteers Peter Mills Jack Ferrer and Deputy Fire Chief William F Hamilton carried out checks and minor repairs. Reflector tape safety stickers and care pamphlets were distributed. materials supplied by the Bicycle Institute of America.

Hillside Democratic Club Finishes Dinner Plans

The Dinner Dance Committee finalized the Hillside club annual event to be held Sunday evening May 24 at Club Diana Springfield. Honorees include Mayor Monroe Ackerman Township Clerk Louis Dischler and Senator Harrison Williams with Democratic county officials attending. Legion dinner heard Col. Francis R. Gerard of the New Jersey Bureau of Aeronautics outline Newark Airport’s impact with 7,000 jobs and rising passenger travel. He warned a northern New Jersey jetport must be planned with a five year lead time, while efforts to curb noise continue.
