Community Orchestra Spring Concert in Hillside
The Hillside Community Orchestra directed by Michael J. Buglio will give its annual Spring Concert at Hillside High School Auditorium on Wednesday May 14 at 8 30 p m. Harriet Rogers will sing operatic and popular selections with minor augmentation from Elizabeth Local 151 A F of M aided by a grant from the Recording Industries Trust Funds. Rogers, a Juilliard and Carnegie Hall trained pianist singer and teacher from Irvington, has performed with the National Opera Company and in TV and radio. Admission is free for Hillside and nearby residents.

Township officials move to curb block busting with new ordinance
Township committee approves a measure banning real estate inducements that pressure residents over neighborhood changes. Hillside Jaycees President Gary Beinhaker lauded Lt. John Senatore and Detectives Robert Oran and Robert Mason for capturing two bank robbers after a spring street chase. The Hillside Rotary Club presents an evening of entertainment titled An Evening to Remember on Friday May 23 at the Hillside High School Auditorium. Three singing groups will perform and proceeds aid youth scholarships and local programs. Tickets are $2 or free for children 12 and under with an adult admission. A Flea Market follows on Saturday June 7 at War Memorial Building on Liberty Ave with items donated by members’ wives. Proceeds support Boy Scouts Girl Scouts PAL Pop Warner Little League nurses scholarships.

Public Works Dept Picket Tries to Press Negotiations
Eighteen members of the Public Works Department picketed the Municipal Building during the Township committee meeting to press for contract negotiations. Led by foreman Anthony De Filippo and Bill Faycik, the group marched along Liberty Ave for about an hour and did not attend the meeting. They seek wage scales from 5000 to 9500 and plan to pursue elections and arbitration, while Mayor Menza defends past salary equalization and warns of broader raises next year.
