New Jersey has adopted the uniform state aeronautics law, giving greater justification for a Cedarhurst ordinance on aircraft over hillsides than New York’s. The law vests airspace in landowners subject to flight rights, but protects quiet enjoyment of property beneath from low or dangerous flights.
Senator Henry Cabot Lodge proposes Boston Logan International Airport as the American terminal for U S European air travel to relieve congestion at New York and Washington area airports. He writes to the Civil Aeronautics Administration noting concerns over traffic concentration and recent crashes as warning signs.
Rosenberg retires after 30 years with the Internal Revenue Bureau in Newark. Jack J. Rosenberg of 218 Grumman Avenue was honored at a testimonial dinner in the Essex House by the U S Treasury Post American Legion, where he is a past commander. A World War I veteran, he serves on the Planning Board and formerly on the Board of Education. He is a member of B nai B rith and past president of the Men’s Progress Club. He and his wife have two daughters, Mrs Arnold A Grunther and Joan Rosenberg.
Nat Gold, committee chairman of Boy Scout Troop 94, heads the commissary for the 1952 Jambo Campo in the Northern District Union Council. The event runs from the evening of May 23 through Sunday May 25 at Surprise Lake. The cubbing program is set for May 24 and nineteen scout troops will take part in an outdoor rally competition. All friends and families are invited.
Miss Erna Schmitmeier of 304 Jersey Avenue Union has been promoted to note clerk at Hillside National Bank filling the vacancy from the resignation of Miss Florence McElwee who married Saturday. She has worked at the bank since February and previously served in the consumer credit department.

Joseph Loyko and ten men were arrested for gambling at Loyko's home on April 19. Loyko's bail was set at 1000 dollars by Police Magistrate Sid ney Birnbaum for grand jury action. Several others including George Policastro Angelo Marino and Michael Policastro faced fines for gambling offenses. A protest against granting a War Veterans Memorial Building club liquor license drew 44 signatures and 17 nearby residents attended hearings. The ABC Board questioned legal authority to grant a license as the building opened this year and no representative from the Memorial Building Association was present.
A noted preacher will occupy the pulpit at the Church of St Mary Magdalene on Sunday May 4 at 11 o clock for the Choral Eucharist. The speaker is Reverend Frank D Gifford PhD STD Dean of the Philadelphia Divinity School. He is regarded as an engaging and forceful speaker.
Sidney Greenstein a 47 year old resident of 711 Chan cellor avenue Irvington was listed in fair condition at Alexian Brothers Hospital Elizabeth after being struck by a car driven by Peter Positero 1295 Broadway in front of Hillside Recreation Bar 1386 Liberty avenue The injury list includes a compound fracture of the left leg possible skull fracture and internal injuries Police say Greenstein stepped off the curb to reach the driver's side of his parked auto on Liberty avenue and was struck Positero told police he did not see him He was treated at the scene by Dr Ralph Schwartz and later moved to the township hospital by ambulance
Hillside tested its Civilian Defense system in a statewide drill. Some postmen heard alarms while others did not as streets fell silent for ten minutes. Students at Harden Locker School hid in basements, while observers and police logged actions for a May 7 council meeting.
Police this week investigate thefts totaling 488 dollars from Pine Tavern at 249 Long Avenue after a rear door was forced Monday. A wave of auto thefts hit Monroe Gardens with hub caps worth 30 dollars plus from residents on Schley Street. Claims filed by Mrs. C Surnstein, Mrs. Sylvia Kosnett, Benjamin Feldheim, and Frederick Ressler. Esther Wernick reported a flower box and plant valued at 13 dollars stolen from 1474 Highland Avenue.
Operation New Jersey was followed by Operation Squirrel with three police officers dispatched to 286 Williamson Avenue to free a squirrel trapped in a horizontal drain pipe. Jules Schwartz, 18, reported the barrel-chested animal stuck at the entrance, tail torn loose after tugging. Sgt Oscar Bishop and Patrolmen Frank McGhee and George Helock freed the creature by banging the exit side of the pipe, driving it out by shock.
The First Baptist Church of Hillside announces the Annual World Vision Conference running from Friday through Sunday May 4. Speakers include Rev Eric Fykenberg of India at 8 p.m. Friday, Rev Eldon Johnson of Bolivia at 5 a.m. Saturday, Rev Roy Wahtson of the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society at 11 a.m. Sunday, and Rev Kenneth Hinds of Africa at 7 45 p.m. Sunday.
Electrical products by Buchanan Electrical Products Corp displayed at the Hotel Essex House Newark during the 28th annual convention of the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers. More than two thousand engineers from across the state attended the event.
Hillside High School prepares a full evening of orchestral band and choir in the auditorium Friday May 9 at 8 15 p m. Supervisors include Mrs Henrietta Spaeth Leonard Strassman and Anthony Chirico with student performances by the A Cappella choir glee club string orchestra and symphonic band featuring works by Wagner Haydn Beethoven Handel and Shubert plus Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue and other solos by Barbara Urbine Janet Williams Ruth Gecker Sheila Sternbach and Joan Lilien.
Saybrook School will celebrate National Music Week with a music festival Friday evening May 2 at 8 p m. Admission is 25 cents and proceeds will go to the school.
The Nocturnal Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Elizabeth on Friday evening May 2. Catholic women from Union County attend an eight PM Holy Hour proceeding to 6 AM with Midnight Mass. Rev Thomas J Gilliooly of Seton Hall University leads. Sponsored by the Maternity Guild and hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Refreshments follow Mass in the hospital cafe.
Residents near Liberty and Hillside avenues opposed a proposed municipal center at the Honor Roll site, signing 86 petitions arguing increased traffic and noise. They urged preserving the tract as a park, noting no park exists nearby and suggesting use of Town Hall or conversion of the War Veterans Memorial into a library.
Schacht Steel Construction, Inc. announced at the Assessment Commission hearing it withdraws its protest of the Ramsey avenue deferred sanitary sewer assessment. The action follows a clarified understanding of the facts and aims to cooperate with Hillside officials. Confirmed assessments include two trunk and lateral charges totaling $5,129.71 and four curb assessments on Tillman, Harvard, Rutgers, and Crescent streets.
