On Saturday April 1 the 1950 Census of Population Housing and Agriculture begins nationwide. Enumerators carry a 14 by 20 inch portfolio with red white and blue lines and an identification card signed by District Supervisor Charles A Gering. Impersonation of a census taker carries penalties. The President and New Jersey Governor proclaim April as Cancer Control Month. James J. Holsing mayor calls Hillside residents to learn cancer facts and join the 1950 Cancer Crusade, urging support, education and fundraising for research and services.
Mayor James J. Holsing stated yesterday that if reelected he will serve out his term. He addressed rumors and erroneous comments aimed at his integrity, blaming Democrats for spreading the speculation and insisting he will uphold the oath of office and not resign to let others appoint a replacement.
The Municipal Civic Center Committee weighs sites near Hillside and Liberty avenues. Bristol-Myers property on Hillside is favored by more groups for development and potential sale revenue, while Honor Roll site near Hillside and Liberty faces strong veteran and Progress Club opinions. Township must learn Bristol-Myers asking price and possible sale bids.
The Board of Education last Thursday set a $10,000 salary ceiling for the supervising principal of schools. Dr. Wayne T. Branom remains in the post with a $500 raise on July 1, reaching $9,200, plus a $500 raise in 1951 and $300 in 1952 to max out. Mrs. Jean A. White is reappointed district clerk with a $200 raise, while Mrs. Emma W. Knox dissented on both actions, noting budget constraints. The board also raised salaries for janitors and maintenance staff, added three new elementary teachers Miss Florence Rabinowitz, John F. Hodson, and Gloria Ross, and approved repairs at Calvin Coolidge School playground.
Walter Borneman, chairman of the Hillside Recreation Board, announced that applications are being received for the post of recreation supervisor before Monday, April 10. The board will meet to select a successor to Richard Foster who recently resigned. Letters of qualifications should be sent to Borneman at 1215 Stone Street. The post pays $2,800 a year. On April 30 a meeting to organize softball leagues will be held at the Recreation Center on Liberty Avenue on Tuesday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. Twelve to sixteen teams have entered previously, and the entries may be split into two leagues, one possibly the Community Softball League.
The Township Committee will ask the township engineer to draft plot plans for three sites under study for a local civic center. The Civic Center Committee met to select Bristol-Myers on Hillside avenue, the honor roll site at Liberty and Hillside, and the present town hall area with a corner at Hollywood and North Broad. The plan aims to provide concrete visuals for organization representatives to assess size and potential use.
Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 95 sponsored by Progress Club pass tests during a Surprise Lake hike on Saturday. Leaders Herman Biarsky Ira Koris Warren Spielvogel Martin Weiss Peter Rasmussen and Barry Kirsch oversaw hiking cooking and cleanup while Marvin Teitelbaum also completed hiking and cooking tasks.
Francis H. Walker longtime Hillside resident and former Board of Education president will chair the Hillside Cancer Fund Drive for April Cancer Control Month. He will oversee a 15 district mailing campaign with 3 000 letters and district chairmen guiding community fundraising. Mayor Holsing serves as honorary chairman and local officials organize as Union County Cancer Society representatives.
A new Liberty Avenue merchant organization formed to boost local business. About fifteen merchants joined. officers include Steven Zelko as president and John Starko as vice president, with D Kizuma as treasurer. Arthur Dienst served as honorary chairman.
Dedication of the Steinberg home at 1434 Mann Avenue will be held Sunday April 2 at 3 PM. Representatives from Hillside organizations including Hillside Lodge 1591 the BPO Elks and the Hillside United Paraplegic Committee invite the public to attend. The event marks the hopeful release of Irving Steinberg from Halloran Hospital after almost five years of hospitalization.
Brownie Troop 49 sponsored by Saybrook School P T A held a mother and daughter gathering Friday at the school. Mrs Seymour Ordower serves as the troop leader guiding activity and bonding moments for families involved.
The Board of Education offered the Saybrook School building for municipal use to relieve Town Hall congestion. The Township Committee, after advancing leases for other quarters, faced questions if the offer came too late. Mayor Holsing cited plans to enlarge the tax collector space by moving Health and building inspection offices, with Saybrook involvement uncertain after March discussions.
Attorneys for Hillside Township Monroe Gardens Inc and Plymouth Homes Development Co argued before Superior Court Judge Frank L Cleary on deferred sewer assessments dating to 1930 The township contends undeveloped areas were placed in deferment and later equalized to avoid discriminatory charges Complainants seek relief while Monroe Gardens and Plymouth Homes were assessed 7900 and 4165 06 respectively for additional benefit Judge Cleary’s ruling was awaited with the township represented by Irving B Johnstone and the complainants by Charles M Grossman and Lawrence Friedman
