Maple Ave Fire Destroys Stores and Apartments

Firefighters battled a two story Maple Ave building at 1567 1573 Maple Ave for nearly six hours. Four stores and four apartments were destroyed with $60 000 in damages. Three residents were rescued. The Johnston Co blaze at 1269 Central Ave followed, with casualties and injuries treated on scene.

Krautblatt Retires After 38 Year Career

William Krautblatt the principal of George Washington School in Hillside will retire effective June 30 after 38 years in the Hillside school system. He began as a math teacher and led George Washington for 24 years. He also helped found the Hillside Community Orchestra and held roles in B'nai B'rith.

Fourteen Year Old Surrenders Marijuana and Papers

A fourteen year old boy turned over eight packs of marijuana and two packs of roll-your-own cigarette paper to Detectives Gordon Millburn and Anthony Messané at 6 p.m. last Wednesday. Investigators, still probing a missing school pupil report, found the youth had returned home. A burned marijuana cigarette was observed, and the boy handed over the powder and papers. He was released to his parents pending juvenile action.

Police to start dog census for 1969 license enforcement

Beginning Monday March 31 1969 the police will conduct the annual house to house dog census. Residents who have not obtained a 1969 dog license will receive a summons for appearance.

Rotary Club Microfilms The Hillside Times Files

The Hillside Rotary Club will have The Hillside Times newspaper microfilmed by Microfilming Corp. of America Hawthorne New Jersey. The Times founded 1924 will be preserved for community use with the finished film to be given to the Hillside Library. President Theodore L Mayhew announced arrangements with Peter A Brulatour company manager. The project will take about two weeks at substantial cost.

Pedestrian Struck On Route 22 Near Doremus Place

Melvin Winters 67 of Winfield was hit at 11 37 p m by a car driven by Thomas King 30 of South Plainfield on Route 22 at Doremus Place. King says he could not stop as the man ran in front of the car. Winters said he was running to a gas station for fuel.

Car Crash Damages Mrs Gottlieb Vehicle in East Orange

Police were told at 12:44 a.m. Wednesday that Mrs Sylvia Gottlieb’s parked car was struck. Driver Howard S. Maide, 19, of 49 Fairmount Terrace East Orange, said he was traveling north on Compton Terrace when the other car went out of control and struck Gottlieb’s car, pushing it.

Board Approves Latin Program At Abram Morris Saybrook

The Board of Education approved a Latin elective for seventh and eighth graders at Abram P. Morris Saybrook School with a 100-student minimum enrollment for 1969 70. The district lists 207 eligible pupils and notes French German Spanish and Italian already offered in high school. A March 24 meeting will discuss reallocating half-year funds amid a budget dispute of about $59 664 57.
