One-Third Get Polio Shots in Local Schools

Health Officer Samuel M. Jowitt reported uncertain vaccine effectiveness and ongoing inoculations at several schools. At Glavin Coolidge School only 14 of 42 first and second graders appeared for shots, about one third. Washington School saw 43 of 140, Morris Harden Looker, Hillside Avenue, and Christ the King School planned further sessions this week.

Student Nurse Sues Builders Over Hospital Tunnel Fall

Adrietine M. Englander a Newark Beth Israel student nurse at 12 Hillside Avenue filed a Superior Court suit seeking 30000 damages for injuries from a fall in an underground tunnel linking the hospital to the nurses' home last November 2. She blames Starrett Bros. and Ekens Inc. of New York, alleging leg injuries and shock after stepping into a two foot deep pit filled with water.

Youthful Driver's License Revoked After Reckless Driving

Pleading Guilty to Reckless Driving, 18 year old Roman G Schweizer Jr of 60 North Avenue Elizabeth had his license revoked for six months and fined 25 dollars by Magistrate Sidney Birnbaum. The judge had warned students at Pingry School about driving the prior week. Schweizer admitted a speeding violation on record and police chased him for driving rocks on Conant Street at night reaching 70 mph in an attempt to elude them.

Elementary schools awarded diplomas to 253 graduates in a midweek ceremony. Hillside Avenue School led with 106 graduates as Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance opened the program, followed by remarks from Dr. Walter Q. Krumbiegel and Dr. Wayne Branom.
