Lack of Hospital Facilities Sparks Safety Council Warning
The Letter on Page 5 cites serious hospital shortages in the county. Dr. Joseph Peyser asserts no county isolation hospital exists and area general hospitals lack isolation wards, leaving contagious patients in scarce private rooms. He urges public funding to expand Elizabeth area hospitals and notes similar gaps elsewhere. A Hillside safety tip warns of a dangerous Central avenue pavement dip near the playground needing night reflectors after a crash. The piece also critiques plans to use turnpike surplus for railroads and recalls Memorial Day events with crossing guards and a Woodruff Park sales sign seen open for inspection.

Fiancée Gifts Fine To Wedding Cash In New Jersey Court
Morton L. Isaacs of Irvington faced a $50 toll payment in Municipal Court after failing to pay at the Garden State Parkway Union toll plaza on May 15. His fiancée Jane Winterhalter of Scotch Plains testified the coin landed in the hopper but no one was sure it went in. Magistrate Henry Goldhor suspended the fine on condition Isaacs pay the amount as a wedding gift to Winterhalter when they marry in December. Sgt Flynn noted the toll was not paid, prompting the magistrate to monthly-quote the couple’s quarrel about the quarter.
