Richard Earl Funeral Held Honors Hillside Leader
Richard S. Earl longtime Hillside Township Committee chairman died at age 77 from a heart attack. He also led Hillside National Bank as president and helped form the Joint Meeting sewer system in 1926. Funeral services were held at Ogden Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. He was born in Lyons Farms, educated at Salem School Pingry and New Jersey Business College, and served in local politics from 1916 onward. He retired in 1980.

News Dealer Injured By Auto In Hillside Incident
Benjamin Schoenberg a 64 year old Hillside news dealer sustained a broken left collarbone and facial injuries when he stepped from between parked cars into a car on North Avenue. He was taken to Elizabeth General Hospital. Crawford the car driver reported the collision occurred as Schoenberg emerged into the street.

Pay Tribute To Late Mayor Of Hillside
A township committee adopted a resolution paying tribute to Richard S. Barr former mayor of Hillside who died last week. The panel ordered half mast flags and the resolution entered in minutes. Mayor Milton Conford called him a fine citizen who served with distinction. Barr was a former president of Elizabeth Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Union County Boy Scout Council and Men’s Brotherhood of the First Presbyterian Church Elizabeth. He previously belonged to the Hillside Republican Club Rotary Club and United Order of Brazilians. Surviving is daughter Marion J. Earl who worked with him on the family 15 acre truck farm the last of its kind in Hillside.

A meeting last night produced a tocit understanding on Elizabeth River Parkway development along Conant street. Mayor Milton Conford, Engineer Henry Kreh Jr, George Pierson, and residents agreed to conceal a 300 foot parking area with evergreens, relocate a baseball diamond away from the street, and regulate entrances to curb U turns. The Park Commission plans a macadam walk and the Board of Freeholders will be asked to widen the street about 10 feet, with three trees slated for removal under the Shade Tree Commission oversight.

Hillside Marine Is Wounded Again
Mrs. Anna Powell of 1108 St Louis avenue reports her son Marine Pfc. William Powell aged 21 has been wounded in Korea a second time. The Defense Department informed last week that he was wounded again after a July 8 incident, with a prior injury noted from February 20 while on combat patrol. Powell, with the First Marine Division, has been in Korea since February and was recuperating at a rest camp before returning to the front.
