Inspector In Cork Works Fight Continues

Expert Thomas Howarth was hired by the Township Committee to testify at the retrial of five cases against the Mander Cork Corporation in county court on September 12. He will inspect further violations and report per Assistant Attorney Arthur Dienst and Township Smoke Inspector Charles Hanson. The mayor notes worsening air pollution and says Cork Works failed to meet promises. The committee may amend the smoke ordinance to raise penalties to 200 dollars a day and 90 days jail. A resident reports flood damage and requests a sewer upgrade. engineer Kreh will study it. Land offers from Hess and Leib were rejected for being too low as the committee seeks higher frontage values.

Soldier Drowns Abroad While Awaiting Discharge

Pfe. J. Albert Jouben Jr., 25, of 1133 Salem Ave, died Friday night in the Neckar River at Stuttgart, Germany, while swimming. He was to be discharged from the Army Occupation Forces in Germany in September. The Army confirmed the death Tuesday. He married Doris Adolph weeks before his induction in 1950 and had lived in Newark and Hillside. He leaves his parents, a wife, two sisters and two brothers.

Board of Education Pays Salaries Of Recreation Help

The Board of Education halted the Recreation Board payroll transfer and covers $528 weekly in salaries for twelve recreation workers from July 14 to August 15 for six playgrounds. Mayor Kirkpatrick failed to obtain a budget transfer. the Education Board now pays the staff to operate the grounds under Dr. Wayne Branom and Samuel Dubow with Pete Humanik.

Schein Family Injury Update After Turnpike Crash

Mrs. Sophie Schein and her son Lawrence remain critically injured after a July 7 Greyhound collision at the Atlantic street interchange on the New Jersey Turnpike. Israel Schein has been discharged to recover at home at 1600 Maple Avenue. The Ivy Gift Shop benefited from community assistance during the family’s recuperation.

Hillside figures in conventions and a saved sugar maple

Robert C. Crane and Milton B. Cornford were noted as Hillside delegates to national and state conventions while Sarah V. Ackerman served as an alternate in 1928 and a delegate in 1936. Neighbors opposed removing a seventy five year old sugar maple on Salem avenue, leading the Township Committee to revoke permission and refer the issue to the Shade Tree Commission.

Township committee approves funds for soft water study

At Tuesday night’s meeting the Township Committee authorized a petition to the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission for a preliminary cost estimate of a new soft water supply. The board allocated up to 2500 dollars for the inquiry and directed officers to file the petition on behalf of the township.

Shade Tree Commission to trim 306 trees in township

The three member Shade Tree Commission led by Arthur Kreszl plans to trim 306 additional trees and remove nine unneeded ones. Greenery will be planted on the embankment at the Central Avenue playground to prevent erosion. The commission meets monthly and reports quarterly.

Harriman for President Cousin Votes With Family Ties

Mary Nell Wingert of 826 Union Avenue plans to vote for W Averell Harriman if nominated at the Democratic National Convention next week. She notes their distant cousin relationship through Harriman’s father and grandmother and recalls a brief 1946 meeting. Incorporation Step In War On Airport

A Mayors' Committee in Elizabeth formalized incorporation to pursue legal action against Newark Airport.
