Residents witnessed city streets flooded with water surging from overloaded sewers. Solomon's Department Store basement began taking in water while Linde Air Products facility halted work as drains overflowed. Wires burned and lighting strikes heightened danger during the downpour.
Readers weigh in on blocking new gas stations along Route 29 and North Broad street citing traffic and community impact. Dr. Robert Rosen, chairman of the Central Committee of Veterans Organizations, calls a 8 pm meeting at the Municipal Building to discuss a fund drive for the War Veterans Memorial Building at Liberty avenue and Miller place. World War II veterans plan a September canvass to raise 15 000 to 20 000 to build a one story brick and steel facility for local posts and chapters.
Six Morristown youths were injured Monday night when the car skidded on Route 29 near the North Broad street overpass, overturned twice, and stopped in a gully opposite Lehigh Valley Railroad. Walter Walker and John Spencer were treated at Alexian Brothers Hospital, Elizabeth, with shoulder and head injuries respectively. both in satisfactory condition. Robert L. Gregory 3d, driver on a permit, had slight head injuries. Others, Carl Smith Lewis Broome and George Johnson, received minor injuries and were released. Gregory was speeding. a summons for careless driving will lead to an appearance before Magistrate Clarence E. Kremer Saturday.
Hillside adopts first reading of a zoning amendment requiring off street parking for all new construction and major alterations. The ordinance defines a 160 square foot parking space and sets scales by building type from single homes to theatres and factories plus a $500 shade tree appropriation. Public hearing set for July 26.
Township offices for the Board of Health Plumbing Inspector and Road Overseer relocated today from 1284 North Broad to 1282 1280 North Broad next to the police driveway. The tax collector room will be created in the old space after a graph machine is moved from 1444 North Broad. A $500 shade tree appropriation was approved for trimming trees under Union County Shade Tree Commission direction. An ordinance to install drainage pipes and basins for Wilder street extension open ditch was authorized with an estimated cost of 5000. Frank Dominick won a 2757.50 bid for Windsor Way sanitary sewers. Central Avenue Playground fencing bids referred for tabulation. Storm sewer blocks in Liberty avenue Ryan street area referred to engineer for review. An offer of 17605 for a block bounded by Lakeview Riverside Crystal Marine will be sold July 26 to Dr James C Hanrahan who plans to form a corporation to develop the area with single family homes. Jer ome Corp approved to erect a home on Jer ome avenue pending plans approval.
Building Committee plans to buy an aerial truck for 27 300, approved for consideration alongside paving and curb projects. Commissioner King voted no on the measure while hearings set for July 26 include three ordinances on Paul street Central avenue and an aerial truck purchase.
Two scholarships were granted by the Hillside Rotary Club at a Tuesday meeting. George Baker will attend Cranford Junior College with a $100 award, and Elaine Nadler receives a $150 nurse's scholarship to train at Elizabeth General Hospital. Also noted: no meetings in August and a planned fishing trip mid August. Funeral services for John S. LaBar, 81, were held at Walter Lee Funeral Home after his death Saturday at Alexian Brothers Hospital Elizabeth. He served as secretary of Midway Building & Loan and worked at D I Miller Coal Co. He is survived by a daughter and three sons, plus four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Bobby Malhosky nine and Buddy Lenaz ten went door to door on Hiawatha and Hillside avenues selling colored paintings mounted on cardboard frames. Their effort raised four dollars and fifty cents for the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund.
Funeral services were held for Harry G. Barton at the Walter R. Lee Home on 1283 Salem avenue. Burial took place in Poughkeepsie New York. Barton was 71.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment reserved decisions on July 13 for two proposals: a 72 family garden apartment complex at Liberty Avenue and a lumber and millwork showroom at 1220 North Broad Street. Neighbors oppose the driveway layout linking the complex to McMichael Place citing traffic and noise concerns, while proponents cite parkway plans and FHA requirements.
The Board of Education selected Frank Grad & Sons as the design firm for Hillside school expansions. Eleven firms were considered. Preliminary plans for high school additions and multipurpose rooms at Calvin Coolidge Hurden Looker and George Washington are due in about two months. Mrs Elizabeth Barth resigns as Hurden Looker teacher.
