Police study rape and robbery incidents in Hillside

A Hillside woman was raped and robbed at knifepoint after returning home from work at 3:30 a.m. on June 27. The intruder gained entry through a kitchen window, raped her in the bathroom, tied her in the cellar, and stole $330. In a second incident at Hill Side Pathmark, four armed robbers struck before 9:30 p.m., firing shots, disarming off duty officer Joseph Mariani, and fleeing with about $7,000 plus food stamps and $54 from his wallet. No injuries were reported. Police noted the holdup followed a similar Paterson store robbery in the same week. Officials questioned lawmaker rhetoric and parent concerns as school activities list is cut. Dr. Avella released a list of terminated summer and preparatory programs and staffing actions effective July 1.

Wenzler confronts commissioners over dance hall license

Hillside N J tavern owner Fred Wenzler challenged Township Commissioners after presenting a court stay on a ruling against his dance hall license. Mayor Harold Wovsaniker adjourned the meeting as Wenzler pressed action while the attorney advised inaction. The session ended with Wenzler at the microphone and officials leaving. In other business the Township ratified a Clerical Employees agreement retroactive to January 1 1976 with wage and benefit terms through December 31 1976 and pay increases effective January 1 1977.
