Ready For New Mothers March details completed for January 31 event from 7 to 9 pm. District captains named across districts with police protection provided. Returns will be at the College Inn on Yale Avenue with refreshments after the march.
Monroe Ackerman, special attorney to the Planning and Zoning boards and Municipal Court prosecutor, is named as a likely successor to Disehler on the Township Committee. Dischler’s term ends this year. Sam Katz, Democratic chair, is viewed as a potential township clerk candidate but hesitates amid political uncertainty. Republicans study a clerk manager government reform with a special committee examining the option.
Hillside branch carriers are laid up by minor injuries from snow and ice. George Bradley, superintendent, reported the issue and urged residents to keep walks and porches clear so mail delivery can proceed without hazard to mailmen.
Mrs Peggy Roche president of the Hillside Democratic Club announced this week that the Democratic Club will hold a victory dinner dance celebrating the Democratic victory last November on February 19 at the Club Diana 2800 Springfield Avenue Union. Mrs Roche stated there will be a full course dinner dancing entertainment and prizes.
Albert Schoen former Republican municipal chairman yesterday announced his endorsement of State Senator Walter Jones for the Republican nomination for governor.
Tax Collector John C Pozar announced taxes are due February 1. To accommodate residents the tax office will be open Monday evenings January 30 and February 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Tilliside Township and two defendants agreed to a $7500 settlement over the death of 18 year old Thomas Surn of Union who died after his head struck a roadside stanchion on Route 22. The Hillside company will pay $3000 and John Fresco $1500, with the balance to the youth’s father Chester Sar. The incident occurred while Surn was a passenger in Fresco’s car returning from New York. he died hours later at Elizabeth General Hospital.
Frank Nesta of Wood Avenue was held in 1000 dollars bail by Magistrate W William Di Buono on an atrocious assault and battery complaint by his wife Paulette 33. Police say a kitchen argument led to a stabbing with a carving knife in the buttock. Nesta claims she backed into the knife. Dr Milton M Lilien treated her.
Township Committeeman Max Schleifer, head of the Fire Committee, described his Madrid visit arranged with the U S Embassy. He met Eduardo Ruano at Madrid Fire Headquarters and toured the fire house, dormitory, gym, and storage areas with his daughter translating. He rode in a Spanish Seat to the station and observed 44 uniformed firefighters in formation.
The New Jersey State Highway Department will accept sealed bids February 16 for widening the Liberty Avenue viaduct and approaches on Route 22 in Hillside. The project aims to reduce bottlenecks by adding two lanes and extending Bloy Street, with reinforced concrete deck work, new center barriers, and a sidewalk. Cost shared by state and local governments, with about 300 workers.

A resolution backed James P. Mitchell for governor. Dienst spoke on the Faulkner Act. Meeting night moved to the fourth Wednesday. Next meeting February 22 at the College Inn. Refreshments served by Mrs Harry Miller and Mrs William Beattie.
Ruhl L. Custer principal of Hillside High School lies in Overlook Hospital Summit with a fractured right hip from an accident in front of his home. He had hired boys to clear snow when a snowplow blocked the driveway and he slipped while clearing it himself. In Trenton, Albert B. Kurtz 40 of Hillside had his driving license revoked for two months under the point system by the Division of Motor Vehicles.
Martin Cohen age 50 of 18 Marshall Street Irvington was charged with vending counterfeit labeled drug tablets at Ramsey Trucking Co. Det Sgt William Dieroff Det Robert Mason and State Police Det John Corbin filed the complaint. Howard Sayre and Deputy AG Budd Rigg assisted. Bail set at 10000 for Feb 9 hearing. Police say the drugs were adulterated counterfeit produced by General Pharmacal Co Hoboken raided last June.
