Crossing guards oppose supervisor post at Hillside meeting

A group of 17 of 32 crossing guards attended Hillside Township Committee hearing to oppose creating a supervisor of crossing guards. Joan Wolfe, president, said rumors of a new post prompted resistance and cited layoffs and post eliminations in other towns. She noted Lt. Paul DeGraw currently oversees guards and claimed too many bosses.

Board dispute over conflict of interest in hillside schools

Hillside Board debates whether attorney Sanford Meskin, whose wife is a district teacher, may negotiate with the teachers union. Zaino of the New Jersey School Boards Association says no statute bars it but ethical judgments are outside his scope. Parker seeks state ethics opinion. Taetzsch objects to reading the letter aloud. Zaino notes advisory ethics committees can provide guidance.

Police and Township Clash Over 75 76 PBA Contract

After a two and a half hour session the Policemans Benevolent Association and Township Committee remain split on parity and longevity pay. The mayor notes a division of opinion not along party lines as Republicans push longevity payment while Democrats abstain. A Saturday meeting in the Mayor's Conference Room will discuss 1975 1976 PBA proposals, with minutes released after settlement and contract signing.

Hillside Senior Citizens Program Initiative Discussed

The Hillside Community Center Commission promotes a senior program starting Friday January 30. A meeting for interested seniors is set for 1 p.m. at the Center. Dan Palladino is named senior citizens coordinator to plan a daily, needs oriented program. He invites feedback at 923-1285 weekdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until the January 30 meeting. No participation fee is charged before the meeting.

Hillside committee weighs shift in guards supervision

A group of school crossing guards told the Township Committee they do not need a supervisor. The committee weighs appointing a supervisor of guards as police and the committee meet to settle a contract dispute.

Historic North Broad St Walk Braved by Freezing Residents

A hardy group braved 18 degree weather for a motorized five-car tour along North Broad St the historic Upper Road to Netwark. Hillside Historical Society vice president Mrs Jane E Schorr narrated locations from St Catherine s Church to Williamson Ave with two more planned walks and a bus tour for seniors.
