Edward W. Earle and Henry Goldhor of the Board of Education attended the National Citizens Commission for the Public Schools dinner in New York with Gen Omar Bradley and Dr James Bryant Conant. They warned that democracy rests on strong public education and urged increased funding and broader support for schools. Conant emphasized evaluating schools by their success in promoting dignity and tolerance, while Bradley warned of creeping inadequacy across communities.
The Union Boy Scout Council hosts a Northern District rally at 7 30 pm Friday January 20 at Hillside High School for Troops Qu 92 93 94 95 Hillside and Troops 61 62 63 64 65 67 68 69 71 72 Union and Troop 70 Springfield under George Zely camping and activities director. Contests include Morse code signaling fire lighting bow drill knotting relay semaphore signaling first aid and compass reading relay with Philip Leininger heading the judging team except for first aid judged by American Red Cross examiners.
The Board of Education reduced voting hours to start at 2 PM and end at 7 PM for the February 14 election including the 1950 51 budget vote. The change aims to prevent crowding with polling machines for the first time and to ease poll staffing.
The Better Education League hosted its second annual Meet Your Candidates Night at George Washington School. Four candidates for the Board of Education—Mrs. Robert Kirkpatrick, Walter Leibo, Arnold McClow, and Edward Miller—answered five questions on recreation, control of facilities, and following the Columbia University building survey. All favored expanding recreation. opinions varied on board control and building needs, with Miller and McClow cautious and Leibo advocating strong park development in Hillside.
Daniel Leeds Miller 38, son of organizer and first commander Harden-Locker Post 50, will join 25 new members in a mass initiation at the Tillside Presbyterian Church community house. Miller, a Navy veteran from Westfield, is connected to Miller Coal Co. through his grandfather Daniel Leeds Miller Sr. Moe L. Binstock organized much of the intake and has long been active in Legion work. Commander Ellsworth J. Steiner outlined plans for the year and noted Gustave Steffens, retired Elizabeth police captain, will speak on his Crime Bureau work.
A separate maintenance suit filed by Mrs. Alma Feely Ford of Newark against Charles A. Ford was dismissed by Superior Court Judge Schettino. The judge ruled Mrs. Ford failed to prove that her husband abandoned her after their 1946 marriage.
The Township Committee accepted a $12 060 offer by attorney Ellsworth Sterner for land in Livingston Park along the Elizabeth River in a sale set for Wednesday February 8 The tract spans several acres and marks the first major development of Kean and Ogden Woodrule estates property at the township southern edge.
Commissioner James A Onell declared the five member Republican Township Committee already has the water proposal under consideration. He accused Democrats of opposing steps for better and cheaper water, underscoring his dyed-in-the-wool Republican stance. The Hillside Democratic Club had urged action.
