Hillside officials chase a winter safety plan as salt and cinders run low and side streets freeze. Mayor Baldassano pushes emergency no parking rules to speed plowing while commissioners spar over who controls salting and timing.
Angelo Bonanno steps down as Hillside Senior Citizens Transportation Coordinator after nearly two years. Dan Palladino takes over the 16 passenger bus funded by a $15,000 federal grant via Union County Office on Aging to serve the elderly. Firefighters were called to 1595 Ce Place last Thursday night for a blaze at the home of Ahmad Al- Bayinah. The fire started in the basement and spread to the first floor kitchen. The cause is unknown. The blaze was extinguished by 1 a.m. No injuries occurred. extensive damage forced the family to relocate temporarily.
Early morning blaze at 1406 Maple Ave caused extensive damage to a two story residence. Firefighters arrived about 3 30 a m and had the fire under control in 35 minutes. The Notte family leaped from a second floor window aided by a snow bank. No one was harmed. Public Works salted to prevent ice.

Beginning January 20 the Hillside Times will launch a second paper the Elizabeth Times covering Elizabeth city news with features Eat and Grow Younger by Leland Kordel and Its Your Money. The new edition will run concurrently with Hillside Times and be sold at newsstands for the first weeks with radio ads on WJDM announcing the newspaper. Advertisers and community groups are asked to submit copy by Monday.
Police Commissioner James C. Welsh announced a concentrated crackdown around the Hollywood Avenue and Long Avenue intersection after a surge in late night parking violations. On December 29 1976 more than 40 summonses were issued and four cars towed as the entire force targeted hazardous parking and access for emergency vehicles.
The Hillside Times expands its distribution to three new spots. Copies will be sold at Hillside Fruit and Vegetable Shop 1570 Maple Ave Bonanza Sub Shop at Bloy and Buchanan Streets and R and S Grocery at Maple and Grumman Avenues. Residents encouraged to track the Hillside Renaissance at these outlets.
