Hillside Teachers Association protests the 1955 56 budget at a special meeting calling the pay plan unfair and stating teachers with long service are cheated. The board cites increased state aid and plans to raise minimum and maximum salaries, with adjustments over two years.
Local leaders weigh a proposed 18 municipality effort to secure and develop Round Valley as a reservoir in Hunterdon County. Critics warn of multiyear costs and state action gaps while officials note possible tax rate shifts and the need for careful financing and planning.
President Harry A. Cooper of the Hillside Rotary Club is chosen for the 1955 Americanism award of Hillside Lodge 154 Binai Brith. The presentation is set for Monday evening February 21 at Sinai Congregation Maple Avenue. Paul Owen, secretary, announced at a club meeting.

Hillside public library, housed in the Hillside Avenue School, will be open daily from 9 am to 1 pm and Saturdays 9 am to 1 pm once the new building is ready. Miss Lottie Smolensk announced the plan after a board meeting, outlining expanded adult and juvenile reference work and new programs.
Sid ney Silverstein, Hillside Times publisher, promotes a book urging spiritual awakening through God based human power. Endorsed by clergy, the work aims to apply psychology to daily life, improving relations and combating materialism with faith, seven days a week.
A promotional dinner for Boy Scout camping was held near New Mexico and Gilap Winnebago with attendees including scoutmasters and camping leaders. A film about the Philmont Reservation and camp Winnebago was shown along with a film strip on year-round camping prepared by Frank Gundaker of Union.
Curtis Faidlow of 1081 hon street sought a Hillside and Ohio State University background in a February school board bid. A veteran of World War I, he served with the American Legion and held positions in various professional groups. He was married to Lucille Howell.
Mathewson former district governor told Hillside Rotary Club last week that only about fifteen members are senior active and urged opening classifications to new members. Hillside Democratic Committee endorses Mayor Henry Goldhor for the Union County Board of Taxation vacancy. A 1955 56 school budget proposal lowers local district tax from 1 900 169.20 to 1 190 726.80, a $9 443 reduction, aided by state windfall and surplus funds. Public hearing set for January 24 at 7 30 p.m. in the School Administration Building 195 Virginia Street.
The PTA Presidents Council sponsors a candidates night to introduce nominees for the Board of Education. All candidates will be invited by letter. the PTA endorses no candidate and urges public attendance. Mrs Albert Secacin will host the event on Thursday evening at o'clock. the public is invited.
The New Jersey Pest Control Association members must take the Rutgers University entomology short course in New Brunswick from Monday January 17 to Wednesday January 19. Hillside participants Abe Charnack and Nat Gold will attend.
Officials from Newark Elizabethtown Orange Montclair Bloomfield and many others gathered as the New Jersey District Water Commission approved the Round Valley plan. Phase one costs 4 million dollars to supply 0.9 million gallons daily with a five year completion timeline. Local lawmakers say the project will alleviate water shortages for the next decade and compare it to revived Delaware River plans. Mayor Henry Goldhor of Hillside attended the meeting.
Edward Gottlieb and Ernest Schickedane named co chairmen for Hine Vlde High School fund drive. Town wide campaign planned Saturday January 29 from 9 to 12 am with a goal of $2 000.
