Hillside taxpayers confront a 25 point tax increase for the coming fiscal year as the Board of Education and the Township Committee push austerity budgets. The Board tentatively approves a 13 point hike in February budgeting.
Charles Cunningham a 77 year old bank guard from Yale Ave was buried after a Mass at St Michael s Church following his death in a Newark holdup. A 19 year old bandit was killed when Cunningham returned fire and police later arrested two alleged accomplices. Cunningham died on the operating table at Martland Medical Center.
Robert C. Kirkpatrick 78 of 39 Croydon Drive Hillside died Tuesday at home after a long illness. A Carutherville Missouri native, he was Hillside’s first Democratic mayor in 1952 and served on the township committee for five years. He was WWI veteran, VFW and American Legion member, and longtime printer union leader. He and Judge Milton B. Conford helped launch the Democratic run in 1950. Surviving are two sons, a daughter, a sister, and six grandchildren.
Township Committeeman James Welsh accuses the Local Assistance Board expansion from three to five members of being politically motivated to reward party faithful. Marie Troiano and Ann Lord are named appointees as Mayor Harold Wovsaniker defends the move citing quorum needs. A political observer notes Welsh’s past action on a similar five member Shade Tree Commission.
Six candidates for Hillside Board of Education accelerate toward the March 9 election, holding last-minute events and outreach as voters prepare to cast ballots.
Hillside Comets dominated the Union County Relay Championships at Williams Field Elizabeth finishing third behind Westfield and Roselle Catholic. They without key runners Douches and Wells still posted a 1 35.0 in the 4x440 while John Allen led with a 23.1 leg and contributed to a fourth in the shuttle hurdles.
