The 1956 township budget rises by 90,856 to 1,654,058 and the local tax rate is projected to fall about two points from 6.04 to 6.02. Public hearing set for March 6 at 8 p.m. The plan increases municipal spending mainly for police and fire bonuses and road upgrades, while revenues from new ratables and surplus help keep the tax rate down.
Duncan S. Reid of The Port of New York Authority will address Hillside Kiwanis on Wednesday February 15 at 6 30 pm at Hitchin Post Union. He will discuss the Elizabeth marine terminal project on Newark Bay south of Bound Creek and its approval by the Port Authority. Mayor William Gural introduces him.
Hillside Democrats, after selecting a successor to Commissioner Henry Goldhor, fear losing Commissioner Robert G. Kirkpatrick to a possible Union County Board of Elections appointment. If Kirkpatrick shifts, he cannot remain on the Township Committee. The budget totals 1 529 812 25 with 1 221 421 98 to be raised locally after state aid of 193 053 is subtracted.
The annual Missionary Conference of the First Baptist Church of Hillside runs February 15 to 19 with Rev Wesley A Olsen and Dr George A Cole among speakers. Missionaries from Congo Japan Africa Ivory Coast share reports. evenings feature services, slides, and a fellowship supper at 6 30 pm on Saturday. Public invited at Hillside Avenue below Maple.
A group of women met at Lawrence LeVitas home to finalize plans to mobilize voters for the February 14 Board of Education election. A telephone squad and car pool were formed to reach eligible voters. Speakers praised LeVitas work on board committees and his attendance at educational meetings to learn from other districts. LeVitas outlined board activities and cost of efforts to expand educational opportunities.
Dr William F Wacker outlined epidemic influenza cycles and prevention for Hillside National Bank staff at a lobby meeting. He noted seven year cycles since 1918 and said injections can prevent or lessen illness. The bank arranged free injections for employees with a first dose given Friday and a second on February 1, organized by cashier Oliver Werttua.
Donald Antonelli Jr a 17 year old high school senior won third prize at the Tri State Motorama in Trenton for most radically changed. He redesigned a 1954 Mercury into a blue Cadillac lookalike. Les Cove of Hillside did the work. Antonelli a Millmasters Hot Rod Club member was cheered by 25 club members at the award. The club promotes safety and can fine or suspend members for unsafe driving. Antonelli 18, son of Donald Antonelli and Mrs. Antonelli of 1512 Munn avenue.
A Progress Club past presidents dinner drew about fifty attendees Tuesday at Townley's Restaurant Union Eugene Abramowitz honored former presidents from 1931 to date. Sidney Englander, club painting contest chair, reported success and awards at the high school event February 1. Moe Fruchter introduced Jack J. Rosenberg, general chair of the 26th anniversary dance set for May 5 at the Doiglas Hotel in Newark.
Arnold H. McCrow, candidate for reelection to the Hillside Board of Education, urged that the school system can reach top standards with community will and stronger facilities. He emphasized better facilities, teacher housing, and wise policy to prepare students for college or work, calling them the future of the country.
Hillside Public Library in Hillside New Jersey has been chosen to receive one of 1600 Great Books sets. The selection was announced at the American Library Association headquarters in Chicago by executive secretary David H. Clift, funded by the Old Dominion Foundation.
Township moves to reorganize the Police Department in anticipation of the new municipal building. Three patrolmen and a detective named sergeants and desk assignments, plus a night shift for the Detective Bureau, take effect today with pay raises to 5400.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment rejected by a 34 vote the variance to permit a nursing home at 99 North Avenue. Samuel B. Krasney of 121 Clinton Avenue Newark testified. Dissent came from Charles Risch with Herman Artein abstaining. Over 30 residents objected. the property was in a residential area intended for housing. The Planning Board had also rejected a subdivision of the same property.
T J McKittrick of Hillside has received a certificate from Robert B Opin of Purdue University marking completion of a conference course to improve freight and passenger train service on the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Hillside National Bank to stay open Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 pm due to a legal holiday on Monday February 13 19 4. President James A Onell announced the change.
John A. Desch of 1476 Highland Avenue announced his support for I Late Shore, candidate for the Board of Education, in the February 14 election. Desch, Hillside resident for 16 years and vice chair of the Recreation Commission, cites youth activity work with Mr. Share as evidence that Share will benefit the youth and serve the board well.

William Manning 41 of 107 East Filssa Street Linden faced a heavier fine in Magistrate Birnbaum's court for drunken driving due to a poor driving record. Manning lost his license for two years and was fined 275 dollars plus 6 dollars for failing to display the latest inspection sticker. The court noted a conditional license carried a prior revocation, restored only recently.
Prize winners in the annual art contest were awarded gold silver and bronze medals at a high school assembly. Senior junior winners include Santord Epster Barbara Kubichste ad Andrew Boch and Minette Needle. Sophomore freshmen winners list Roa ld Susskind Charlotte Tiedman Stephen Scheer and Mirilyn Marcus. Seventh eighth grade prizes go to Arthur J. Chase Abram Morris Saybrook School Arlene Fre Und Allside Avenue. Second place medals to William Aromando Morris Say brook Caroll Bubow Hillside Ave. Additional prizes to Sondra Rosenberg Calvin Coolidge School Lois Greenhouse Morris Say brook. Judges were Mrs Barney Cent former art teacher and Mrs Henry G Nulton Board of Education.
