Hillside's GOP announces an open door policy with coffee meetings at 166 Long Ave corner Bright St to hear citizens. Anton A. Vit Jr and Joseph Raman announce welcoming local input, commitment to Hillside merchants, and public meeting transparency.
Elizabeth man Sidney Linkow age 45 died of an apparent heart attack while driving a car on Salem Avenue about 9:30 p.m. December 19. He crossed the roadway, hit a tree and stopped. Police noted the vehicle partly across the sidewalk near 1257 Salem Avenue and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Lena Margolis of 1588 Leslie Street received the Best Letter award from the Veterans Administration regional office in New York Newark announced by manager Paul M. Nugent. The monthly prize honors a letter chosen from scores by personnel and a committee for content and appearance, with competition growing and awards aiding promotion considerations.
The Board of Education prepares a 1964 65 budget to meet voter approval. It assumes a 250 annual teacher increment and trims the rise by 102000 after using a 50000 surplus. New fire alarm legislation may raise future costs but not the current budget. Sanctioned candidates also face residency rules limiting potential Board filing.
The Rozano family of 162 Boston Ave celebrates as Peters Rozano steps 10 returns home December 19 from the Jewish National Home for Asthmatic Children in Denver after a January 29 admission. He arrives at JFK Airport with his parents Welfare Director Mrs. Jean Goldhor and Albert Schoen aided by Hillside Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, and B’nai B’rith. Transport, Denver trip, and school plans are arranged alongside a symbolic pet goldfish in water.
Judge V William Di Buono told 125 members of the Honorary FMBA and Local 35 FMBA that more facilities are needed for juvenile rehabilitation. He noted the juvenile court handles 5,000 cases a year and urged support for improved services.
Henry H. Nussbaum of 336 Trinity Pl was named to the Crippled Children's Commission by Gy. Richard J. Hughes, succeeding Fred J. Dress. A New Year’s Day Hillside reorganization will seek to recognize the rejuvenated Republican Party with Anton A. Vit Jr. named Fire Commissioner and Joseph Ram as Finance Committee chair. Desch and Diamond will hold other major posts. Finkel and Parsonnet will fill township attorney roles. Harold Wovsaniker named second special township attorney.
The Union County Technical Institute announces spring semester registration for the evening school on January 13 and 14 from 7 to 9 PM at 160 Globe Ave Mountainside. Courses cover Data Processing Computers Electronics Drafting Physics Metallurgy and related technical subjects includingBlueprint Reading Stationary and Refrigeration Engineering blue and red seal Foremanship and Registered Apprenticeship.
Renowned cellist Maurice Eisenberg will guest solo with the New Jersey Symphony in a January series at Rutherford Millburn Livingston and Montclair high schools. He will perform Elgars Cello Concerto in E minor along with Weber Baretta Overture Schubert Unfinished Symphony and Debussys La Mer. Concerts run January 11 15 16 and 18. Youth jailed for needle possession in home December 11 Clifford J Horstmann 20 of 115 Virginia St sentenced to six months in county jail on December 19.
Frank Uhrin was promoted to Assistant Manager in Office Services at Bristol-Myers Products Division. He has 18 years with Hillside pharmaceutical concern and started as an office assistant. He also serves as advisor to the Jaco Company, a Junior Achievement group sponsored by Bristol-Myers in Union County. The Uhrins live at 130 Cottage Pl., Westfield.
The 1964 March of Dimes appeal to industry is announced by chairman William Galik. The letter cites progress in arthritis and birth defect research, new clinics, patient care advances, and the Salk Institute studies. Co‑chairmen, secretaries, and local officials assist in mailing and organizing the Mothers March efforts.
The thirteenth annual United Cerebral Palsy Telethon will air on Channel 9 WOR TV from 10:30 p.m. Saturday January 11 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday January 12. Dennis James returns as master of ceremonies with Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme hosting. The telethon features stage screen and radio stars plus demonstrations of therapy for cerebral palsy children. Participating New Jersey agencies include UCP Associations of New Jersey UCP North Jersey UCP Monmouth Ocean UCP Union and UCP Hudson County.
Four New Jersey 4-H club winners from the Baby Beet Show and Sale in Trenton on December 11 were hosted by Public Service Electric and Gas Co on December 26. The group toured the National Biscuit Co plant in Fair Lawn after lunch, meeting Don C. Luce and company officials at the Newark general office. The winners, including James Alampi Paul Knapp Richard Winters and Kathleen Woodward, supplied prize Hereford and Blue Ribbon steer to Public Service.
Furs jewelry and cash totaling over ten thousand dollars were reported stolen from two homes Saturday night December 21. Police said two diamond mink coats valued at four thousand were taken from the Suckno residence at 616 Purce Street along with jewelry and cash. A wire fox jacket was found nearby. The Thompson home at 80 Baver Terrace lost two mink coats valued at fifteen hundred and additional jewelry. Both entries were through rear doors and the houses were thoroughly ransacked.
Dopp Construction Co. of New York City filed a suit in Superior Court after the Zoning Board of Adjustment denied its permit to build a gas station at North Broad Street and Williamson Avenue. The suit claims the 2-2 vote with a vacant seat was arbitrary and contrary to the evidence from a public hearing. Prior apartment and supermarket permits were also rejected under a township gas station ordinance.
The funeral of George Geiger a 19 year old youth of 87 Valley View Bay was held December 24. He died December 22 from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning while working on his car in a closed garage. Police reported he was alone when overcome and died before ambulance arrival. He had recently graduated from Hillside High School and worked as a tool and die maker apprentice. Survivors include parents Ferdinand and Mrs Geiger two brothers and several grandparents.
