Township approves 659288 grant for municipal building expansion
A federal grant of 659,288 under the Public Works Employment Act funds a 900,000 square foot south end addition to Hillside Township Municipal Building. The project expands the library, police, civil defense, and adds space for senior citizens, Board of Health, Alcoholic Education, and town boards. Construction to start spring 1978, bids late Jan or Feb, with completion by spring 1979. The grant covers most costs. township pays about 14,000 for architectural plans.

The Hillside Planning Committee for Goal Development met at Hillside High School to draft a plan inviting total community input into Thorough and Efficient education aims for Hillside public schools. A subcommittee was formed to craft an instrument for broad involvement with student and industrial committees supporting it. School Board Elections Postponed In New Jersey
The New Jersey School Boards Association welcomed enactment postponing school board member and budget elections. Governor Byrne signed the bill granting seven more weeks to compute state aid, shifting regional district elections to March 22 and others to March 29. Dr Mark W Hurwitz cited accuracy gains in budgeting due to the delay. Legislative delay on S 1503 slowed district aid figures from the Department of Education.

Rizzuto Wins Hillside’s Earl Smith Nost Zigio Award
Phil Rizzuto, a former Kansas City Blues star and Yankees great, was voted the Earl Smith Nost Zigio Award winner by the Kansas City Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He was minor league player of the year in 1940 after hitting .347 for the Blues and will receive the honor at the baseball awards dinner in Kansas City on January 29.

Township Committee Rejects Petition Over Salary Hike
In the year end meeting the Township Committee voted 3 to 0 to reject a petition protesting the raise in committee salaries from 3000 to 4500. Township Attorney Al Parnell said the petition had too few signatures and did not satisfy statutes. The committee praised itself for harmony and noted a 650000 grant for a municipal building expansion.

Hillside native promoted to first vice president at Fed Reserve
Henry R. Czerwinski, formerly of Hillside, promoted to first vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City effective Feb 1. He will oversee operations in the Tenth District with 1,750 employees across Kansas City and branches in Denver Oklahoma City and Omaha. A 1951 Hillside High graduate, he joined the bank as an audit trainee in 1959.
