Hillside township wraps 1965 in a year end meeting. Committeeman John Desch exits after six years while Mayor Robert Diamond bids farewell. Desch praises Diamond and pledges future civic involvement. Diamond notes bipartisan tensions but says progress benefited the community. Also approved bond notes, tax overpayment refunds, and an easement for a storm sewer. The Township Committee grants Centre Bowl a six month extension to two a.m. for pool lounge hours while keeping a midnight closing rule for those under nineteen. Centre Bowl touts three full time managers, $40,000 in annual taxes, and about 40 local employees as a community asset alongside bowling and other activities.
Four candidates have announced for the Hillside school board post on February 8. They are Peter Humanik, Mildred Hess, Sanford Meskin, and Jack Valenti, with Meskin the sole noncurrent board member. The 1966 board faces over 2.6 million dollars in public funds and shifts in relations with teachers amid broader New Jersey education news.

Sanford Meskin an attorney and Newark native announces his bid for the Hillside Board of Education with a strong background in law finance and civic service. He is active in local Jewish and community groups and has served as a leader in United Jewish Appeal and Jaycees. He resides at 54 King St with wife Muriel Goldwater and their three children. Jack Valenti also seeks re election to the board after six years of service and leadership in education relations and public affairs.
Berkeley Savings and Loan Association sponsors the New Year’s Day Orange Bowl telecast featuring Nebraska Cornhuskers versus Alabama Crimson Tide at 7:45 p.m. on WNBC-TV Channel 4. Richard Gartenberg announced the sponsorship, with the Savings and Loan Foundation bringing the color broadcast nationally. The firm operates two Newark offices offering thrift services.

John Rottuno of 916 Sheridan Dr Roselle retires January 1 after 40 years at the Industrial Branch Hillside Post Office. He began March 13, 1925 and will return more than 1400 hours of accumulated sick leave.
