The Union County Bar Association adopted a resolution mourning Emil A. Herrigel, longtime Hillside township attorney and police judge. The tribute credits him for municipal service, education board work, and active involvement in financial, fraternal, and civic circles.

Albert Schoen announces his bid for the Board of Education with two vacancies expected for three seats. He is a real estate broker and developer from 352 Trinity Place with offices at 1450 North Broad Street and has helped develop Conant Park and southern Liberty Park areas in the township.

James Cook of 164 Barclay Street Newark will appear in Magistrate Court on Saturday December 16 to answer charges for failing to stop at a stop sign on North Broad Street and Hillside Avenue and for operating a vehicle without a driver’s license on Tuesday evening, police said.
Township Committee adjourned early to pay respects to Emil A. Herrigel, the township attorney who died Monday. Officials viewed the body at Haeb erle and Barth Funeral Home in Irvington. Flags ordered at half mast for 30 days and a resolution prepared for the family. The committee will reconvene after the Board of Health meeting next Wednesday.
Born in Newark, Herrigel was son of Fred and Margaret Herrigel. He graduated from South Side High School and Rutgers School of Law Newark. Admitted to the bar in 1926, he formed the firm Herrigel Lindabury and Herrigel later reorganized as Herrigel Bolan and Wieser. He served Hillside as board of education attorney, township attorney, police court judge and recorder.

A capacity audience enjoyed the Saybrook School Christmas operetta Red Candles Friday night in the Coe Avenue School auditorium. Cast members included Mary Ann Murray, Lonny Lowden, Connie Starace, James Holsing, David Armitt, and Gary Grutkowski with a dream chorus, waifs, and wooden soldiers. The school orchestra, rhythm bands, and primary grade singers accompanied. Mrs Ruth Kettenburg directed, assisted by Miss Henrietta Sripa and others. candy canes were given to all children by the PTA.

The Hillside school system board adopted salary increases rounding to $8 to $40 monthly for most employees, boosting the budget by $26,844. Teachers receive $10 to $30 rises with a $100 minimum and $200 maximum for pay bands, while principals janitors clerks and secretaries also see higher scales and new minimums.
Mayor James J. Holsing announced he will transfer with American Telephone & Telegraph Co. to Springfield Mass. His family will remain in the city until July 1.
More than 200 guests and students attended Hillside High School science excursion club’s Christmas tea-dance in the Coe Avenue gym. Performances included vocal renditions, ballet, specialty dances, a violin solo, and glee club songs.
