In Union County a pilot program at Union College places 30 of 41 volunteer teacher aides in classrooms across levels from junior high to high schools. Four students assist in the Reading Study Skills Center, each helping up to 10 hours weekly. Dr. Poirier says the program gives future teachers early classroom exposure and helps teachers focus on individual pupils. ten aides remain to be placed nearby this semester. If successful, the program will run again in spring.
