Washington's Army flag ceremony marks 200 years since retreat

A 200th anniversary ceremony in Newark honored Washington's Continental Army as it retreated toward Trenton. Officials from Union County and Newark received national state and county flags at Lyons Farms School House site now in Newark Museum. A December 4 reenactment walk across Union County from Williamson Ave to Roselle Park will start at 9 am with multiple staging points and coordinated groups concluding near Roselle.

Fire Dept Calls for Visible House Numbers Township urged to display numbers

Township notes many homes and businesses lack visible street numbers hindering police fire and ambulance response. Ordinance 183.35 requires three inch numerals on buildings near the front entrance. Hillside will obtain 251000 from New Jersey to rebate 1976 property taxes. The Board of Education may claim some or all funds if showing need, with distribution rules pending township committee and state approval. Credit toward next year’s ULXCS hoped if state allows.

Baldassano to be chosen next Hillside mayor

Baldassano, re elected to Hillside Township Committee last November, is expected to become mayor on January 1 at the reorganizaton ceremonies. He is a William Paterson College professor and has served on the committee since 1973, with a prior mayoral term in 1975.

Mr Fixit program to aid seniors in Hillside

Hillside will join two municipalities in Union County to receive Title III Older Americans Act funding for a Mr Fixit home repair program. The county provides union labor via Manpower. homeowners supply materials. A contract has been signed and a December 14 meeting will discuss worker insurance and implementation details. The program starts January 1, 1977, as a pilot.

Flu Shots This Week Announced by Health Official

Angelo Bonanno, secretary of the Hillside Board of Health, announced that flu shots will be given this week. The program aims to vaccinate residents and reduce flu cases during the season.
