Cable TV turn on in Hillside within two weeks

Suburban Cablevision plans early service in Hillside with the first area spanning the Town of Irvington to the northwest. Full township construction to finish in four to six weeks, with TV-3 channel broadcasting high school sports and local programs. A public access channel and loaned equipment support community producers.

Senior Citizens Radio Program On WJDM August 1

Larry J. Lockhart announces WJDM will air a senior citizens program titled What Senior Citizens Want To Know on Wednesday August 1 at 1215 p.m. Open Mike topics will cover subjects of interest for seniors with call in questions at 965-1530. Hillside Schools to Open September 8 for 1977-78 Year

Hillside Public Schools will open for students Thursday September 8 at regular times. New pupils must register with health records during August 29 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Kindergarten entry requires age five by December 31 1977 and first grade age six by December 31 1977. An orientation for ninth grade and new Hillside High School students is set for September 7 at 1:00 p.m. New teachers orientation is September 1 at 9 a.m. Regular faculty workshops occur September 6 and 7.

Firemen battle three fires in Hillside during a busy week

Township firefighters fought three blazes in three days. On Thursday at Center Bowling Lanes Evans Terminal a fat fryer fire spread via a fire suppression pin issue and ductwork. Four hours later a mattress fire near Alphonso's Restaurant was ruled suspicious but caused no damage. Sunday dawn saw a car fire at 200 Baltimore Ave sparked by a Molotov cocktail targeting a 1976 Oldsmobile. it was extinguished without further harm.

Hillside Plans 1.3 Million Recreation Renovation

The Township Committee and Recreation Commission reviewed a 1.3 million plan by Charles Bauerlein of Recreation Consultants for renovating four playgrounds Sanford Desch Dover and Central Avenue with new tennis and paddle courts restrooms and landscaping. Financed by Green Acre funds with township and state aid over five to ten years. Public meetings set September 21 and 28 to gather input before final decisions.

Repairs Begin in SCHRMP Senior Citizen Home Program

The SCHRMP committee met on Wednesday August 17 and chair Eleanor Salzman said 29 applications have been received. Some homes in Hill side have already been repaired and hazardous conditions removed. Mr Burns announced several more repairs planned next week for eligible applicants residing in single family dwellings. Donations of materials are welcome and can be arranged via the Building Department at 926-5100.

Thieves Take Cash and Goods in Two Break-ins

Thieves stole a total 11472 in two related-looking break-ins last week. Metropolitan Life Insurance on North Broad Street was entered after hours with 9840.33 in cash and checks. Tobias BBC Appliances on Liberty Avenue lost appliances valued at 1632 after smashing a front door. Three men aided the theft, one fleeing on foot.
